Wearing Team Jerseys
I know it's a Fred-like move to wear a current team jersey, but what about wearing a vintage team jersey?
I bought a team Wheaties-Schwinn jersey NOS with tags with thoughts of framing it and hanging it on the wall. I've been thinking about wearing it but think I might may send the Fred meter off the scale if I wear it while on my Wheaties Team paramount. What do you guys think?

I wear various marathon jerseys/shirts, etc., that I pick up at local thrift stores. So I certainly would not have a problem with someone wearing a team jersey. Note, when asked, I do tell folks that I picked up the shirt at a thrift store. I don't pretend that I ran the marathon. Its just a really cheap polyester work out shirt.
But I am probably a Fred, just a cheap one.

As long as you're not passing yourself off as a team member, I don't think people should have a problem. If you get someone who's a jerk to you about it, flash your livestrong band and mutter "my cousin, Dave", and then silently glare at them.

I wear what I want and have no problem with others wearing current or vintage team jerseys. I could care less if someone wants to dress up in team Discovery kit and make believe they're Lance. If it makes them a happy cyclist, more power to them.
If someone gets bent out of shape over it, tell them you stayed in a Holiday Inn Express.

Do it. It's cool. You're evoking a whole era, and doing it with respect.
*Just don't ever wear a retro or vintage jersey with world or national champion's stripes.
** Unless you won a world or national championship.

+1 to that. World/National championship jerseys are in bad taste, IMHO.

Check out some professional team sites. Some even sell their gear to the general public . Likely helps to support their team.. They don't care, why would anyone else... Wear what you want.

Wear what you like, there are no rules regarding jersey wear unless you are racing. I wear a Team Jelly Belly, an Euskaltel Euskadie, a couple of different Discovery Channels, and a vintage wool Maglia Rosa.
Now shorts is an entirely different matter. See the infamous Polish cycling team pic if you need to know more.

I would not wear a current team kit unless I were on the team or it were given to me by a team member. On the other hand, vintage team jerseys are cool, and the more obscure the team, the better. Classic pro shirts, such as Panasonic Raleigh, TI Raleigh, and 7-Eleven, are great too. On the other hand Molteni and USPS are probably trite and overdone.

I regularly wear my Bianchi jersey (like what Ullrich was wearing in 2003) when on my Bianchi. Quite frankly it's the most comfortable jersey I have. I did buy a Renault-Gitane jersey this fall and can't wait to wear it next spring. I don't worry about what others may think because I ride for myself.

I wear nothing but team jerseys. I'm not going to spend money on a "pretty" but plain jersey.
I'm not impressed with the Army jerseys or the state or university jerseys. Next they'll be selling team jerseys for the Atlanta Braves.

^^^^The Army does have a racing team, as do several state universities.
I own a few but seldom wear 'em, I don't want to mess 'em up. My favorite team jersey is Poseurs, btw.

the commercial
The reference is to a series of commercials of a few years ago...a riff on the old, "I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV." The protagonist jumps in to offer first aid, for example, and is asked, "are you a doctor?" He replies, "no, but I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night." They set it up by extolling how smart it is to stay at a Holiday Inn Express.

Wearing team stuff is fine. I'd better think so, because I do it fairly regularly: Molteni (an "Arcore" standard and a Tdf Yellow), Brooklyn, Peugeot (the famous checkerboard) and Faema repro wool stuff from Vintage Velos. And if Vintage Velos ever re-runs the wool Belgian national champion jersey, I'd be on that like white on rice because it is simply too cool for school. Ditto if I could find Raleigh, La Vie Claire or Renault in my size (Ridiculously-Extra-Enormous).
I don't wear modern team stuff, mostly because I don't like the color and graphics schemes. For the most part, I think color sublimation has been the enemy of good looks on jerseys - it encourages designers to make 'em way too "busy."
As for shorts, I wear black. Period. No Polish National Team phenomenon for me, thank'ee kindly.

I kind of draw the line at yellow and pink jerseys, and anything with rainbow stripes.
other than that, it's all good (and 100% wool is even better).

I wear this jersey on occation. In fact I believe I wore it at the last Vintage ride with members from this group. I dont think anyone has a problem with me wearing it? But if they did that sounds like their problem. At least thats what my mom tells me...

When I was racing, it was team jerseys for team members, only.
No World Championship stripes anywhere, period.
Now, I think that historic team jerseys are okay, I even wanted one a while back BUT. It had WC stripes on the arm bands and collar... so that is still a no go for me.
But make my shorts black please, MAYBE a side stripe of color.
And socks should be primarily white.
Would wear yellow if it is not even close to being considered a Yellow Jersey.
What I really want is a nice plain wool warm up top, short zipper... where's Santa?
