Yes, this bike for J. Sutton was built in Tucson AZ. Since we moved to Tucson in Feb, 1974.... venture to be this bike was early days. That was when I was going on 6 years old. Since no frame number on the BB, I will still check out the book for J. Sutton name to see if I know more about the date.
Great seeing all these bikes on the site over the last few weeks. I did tell Dad (Colin) about these and he is happy to hear they are out there.

Here is my Colin Laing, I think 1977 serial number 5240, originally built for one Gary Moorhouse. Acquired it a few months ago and have cleaned it up a bit. My Flickr link to images.

Would not be surprised with England being on the decal when we first moved over since Dad probably brought some of those stickers with. Then after a while, had them made with Tucson AZ.

Thanks so much Stuart. Super cool to have you helping us out with "The Book". Also super cool that your dad knows we are out here appreciating his work. Cannot wait to revive this bike and ride it. I don't have any shoes/cleats to fit the Look pedals, I'll be on the hunt for some cool pedals/toe clips.

I've got the Big Lebofsky bike F 5292 (pictured above). Purchased 15 years ago in Tucson and have since relocated where my Laing rides the streets of South Bend, Indiana. I love it and intend to keep it forever. Curious if you know approximately how many bikes your father made and sold during his career?

Dad made and sold 1000's of frames/bikes over his career. Lot of bikes with Colin Laing, Laing and Colian on them, plus other names he made for other shops. I grew up in the business but moved onto Higher Education.

I have a question…my Colin Laing is the only custom frame I’ve ever had. The forks, especially the right one, have a very slight wrinkle on the inside of the apex where they were bent. None of my mass produced bikes have this. I had similar wrinkles on some of the conduit bends I made when I was an electrician. Is this normal? You have to really be looking to see it.

I can say watching Dad make bikes and especially forks took time. I do remember him specifically bending the fork blades over the years on a jig. They would come straight from either Reynolds or Columbus, which means you put your own rake on them. So yes, you could see or have a slight wrinkle. Should not impact the frame at all.

Been looking for Sutton bike and cannot find that name. Funny Dad used to make frames for other shops back in the day, so could have been one of those, but unsure. Been through the book many times now.
