Trek 1200

Here is the link to the bike I just bought for my girlfriend!! I think I got a killer deal. I dont know a whole lot about Treks, aside from the fact that they seem to go for a lot more than older road bikes do. The seller said the frame is literally in near flawless condition. Any help, suggestion, pricing, etc would be great.

Thanks,
Free

That was a steal! It looks very similar to the Trek 1420 I picked up today (I payed more that double your price) Probably a early 90s, nice aluminum frame. The best part of the 90's trek is that the decals are much much more durable than older bikes, mine look brand new! Nice Catch, we need to start an early 90's Trek club

How tall is your girlfriend if you don't mind me asking? I am 6'0" and our bikes appear to be close in size

Page 4 of this website contains specs for the 1200, I bet this is close if not exactly what your bike has.

Wow, nice find on your part as well man!! Congrats!! Lol, she is 5'4, maybe pushing 5'5. The seller said his wife is 5'5 and it fits her really well. It is a smaller frame bike, looks like a 50 cm or so. Anyone know what these bikes go for in excellent condition?

Well this is exactly the bike I am picking up tomorrow. It looks like the exact color/decal scheme. Its an 88 I believe. Check out the link to Velospace.

That looks like a dead ringer, just note that he changed some of his parts.

Right, that's a given. Well I was riding my World Sport tonight and my girlfriend was on the Trek and lets remember that the Trek is in great shape, lol, my bike needs a lot of tuning, and basically, she was kicking my assss lol. She loves it and but I think I love it more than her haha. I am going to hopefully soon clean it up and re grease the things needed. Thanks everyone for the great advice etc. I really want a Trek like this in a taller frame to fit me. any suggestions what to look for? Any other models, higher or lower in the chain that would have the down tube shifters, etc.?

Bumpage...I really want to try and find a Trek for myself. Does anyone have any recommendations for my above criteria? That 1420 does look like a sick bike. I just love the idea of the lightness and function ability of the components, etc. But also live the fact that this 1988 bike is for the most part vintage. Thats what really makes the early Treks for me. It seems as if they were and are ahead of the game with components, materials, etc.

Now that the CL ad is deleted tell us what you paid for it, please. I am also in the market for an '80's aluminum Trek. or later perhaps.

check out vintage-trek.com and look through the brochures to see what you might like. IMHO the mid to late 80's 400 series are very nice bikes and can be had for decent prices.

TMH I payed $60 for the bike. I feel as if I got a great deal on it. My girl friend loves it and is actually stoked to go for rides and work on it. OK will keep looking. I am hoping one will pop up at a garage sale here in the near future.

It seems like this is a popular GF model! My wife got one some time ago and finds it just grand. This was also a really good deal at $100 for a nearly unused bike. It is a 1988 or 89, with 105 6 speed thru out. It also got those proprietary Matrix wheels.

Jan, what do you think of the matrix wheels? I have not read great things about them. Mine are in great condition but I worry that I should exercise caution. The neon pink decals on that bike are fantastic!

I have heard that the spoke nipples can pull through the rim fairly easy.

Here is a quote from Sheldon himself:

"Older Treks generally had very nice frames, well worth keeping/updating. The one area of weakness was that they tended to cheap out on the wheels. Many of them had the horrible Maillard Helicomatic rear hubs, and Trek house-brand "Matrix" rims. If you want a nice rider, an old Trek frame with new wheels can be a very nice classic ride."

Thanks for the info. That was a good buy you made. I was looking at this Trek 1000 on ebay and it went for $127.50.

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=170293347510

Of course it makes no sense to buy a bike on ebay and pay almost the price of the bike for shipping. I guess some ebay sellers live in such a small market they have to sell on the bay.
Here in Socal it might have sold for $150 if it's clean. There are more than a few CL hunters that snatch up most anything that's a decent road bike just to flip it.

He had a craigslist pic up until the ad was pulled, I bet he and his girlfriend are having to much fun riding it to take pictures. I'm in Ohio, in a blizzard, the only thing I can do is take pictures .

His was blue, very nice looking. I hope he posts some pictures too.

Guys-

I will post pictures when I have the time. I have the itch to post many pictures. Of the Trek, my newely acquired World Sport, as well as my baby, Nishiki FG/SS. But working 2 jobs while taking 13 credits and between homework (which isnt very much because I spend all my free time bike hunting and/or working on my bikes) it is very hard to do anything fun. But I do promise to get some pics up as soon as I humanly can. I really want an older Trek after riding the one I bought for my GF. The shifters are mechanically perfect feeling and functioning and the frame is so light. It is like the perfect combination of nostalgia and technology. If people could keep posting pics of their awesome vintage Trek finds, it would be very appreciated.
