SA question - backpedaling

Hello,

I've been searching the BF C&A postings, Sheldon Brown, etc. ever since I took on repairing/rebuilding my sister's Raleigh Sports 3 speed (guessing mid to late 70's). She was given the bike by her neighbor. It is in pretty good shape cosmetically, but it has some mechanical issues (headset and bottom bracket need rebuilding, shifts poorly)

I am just getting started on cleaning up the bike and I've noticed that I can only backpedal about a quarter of a turn (or less). I haven't found any BF threads about actually riding a 3 speed, so I am wondering if this is normal or if there is something wrong with the SA hub.

Thanks in advance. So much knowledge shared on this site...just amazing!

That was what I was thinking also. Definitely a Sturmey-Archer AW, and not perhaps an AWC or S3C?

Homer says "D'oh"

Thanks for the replies to my question. I need an "embarrassed face" smiley thing. It is a coaster brake. I hadn't actually ridden the bike, just working with it on the stand.

I'd call that a happy ending, actually! It is what it's supposed to be.

Let us know if you need help with the balky shifting - that's pretty easy to fix, and you might not even need a new cable.
