What model is my Miyata
Hey guys,
I just bought it for $25 from a fella last night, the frame and fork that is. The only model indication on it is the Miyata. It's serial number is on the bottom of the bb shell, I860136.
Also, any suggestions towards some good inexpensive BBs and headsets would be appreciated.
Here's a few pictures
Thanks in advance

I think the "I" in the serial number makes it a 1980. The frame material was used on lower end bikes, so perhaps it is a "110"? Note, the 110 had cromoly frame in 1981. Well worth the $25 price tag, nice buy!
There are plenty of Miyata experts on this list (not me for sure) that will probably be able to ID this bike exactly.

Looks like a early 80's 110. Probably a 1980. Here are links to 1981 and 1982 brochure pages.

awesome guys thanks
i'll def. take a look at shimano for the BB, any particular suggestions for the threaded shell?
and, i'm looking at cranksets. and Pake is a name i keep seeing, but i'd prefer to spend a little less than their $60 tag price, any alternative ideas for that?
and finally i just ordered a nashbar ISO 1" headset, it should do the job

Niagara sells low end Shimano cartridge bb in multiple sizes for about $10. On crankset, I would start watching ebay for Sugino, SR and other vintage brands. Or get a donor bike.

A new crankset for $60 is pretty good. Your BB will depend on which cranks you choose.
Here are some nice headsets
VO basic
VO hotness

Crank set? Go "good" used, see the WTB/For trade thread and make 'em an offer on those Shimano's, maybe. You can get a 105/600/Exage for about $20 in lots of places. Heck, you can get a Tekon bb and a new Veloce for about $60 total.

I have a Miyata that's definitely a 1981 (have the sales receipt from 1982), and it has a serial beginning "J." My guess is that your "I" is a 1982.
Does anyone know what those letter stickers above the serial number are for? -- I've seen them on just about every Miyata BB underside I've seen.

No, the letters go the other direction. I is 1980, J is 1981, K is 1982, etc.

If he is looking at a Pake crank most likely it's going to be a fixed gear bike and $60 is about bottom for anything new/decent with a chain ring that is single speed. That's likely what the lad is up to.

I had ended up ordering a:
Nashbar namebrand headset @ $18
Sugino XD 46t 170mm @ $63
SHIMANO UN54 BOTTOM BRACKET 68mm X 110mm @ $25
(prices are after shipping cost)
i think i made off pretty well
