A few more pics from back in the day. At the National Time Trial Championships near Madison, WI in 1979. I didn't real well, but hey, I was there:

I really like the attire female bike racers used to wear:

Summer of 69 I believe. My first Fixie.
I would have been 3. My sister has the bike. It has been cleaned up and a stand made for it. http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...7&d=1214764436 |
What a great tread! I wish i had some pics to contribute. My photos from those years were lost at some point. : ( Fun stuff!!

The deterioration of the rigid foam inside, caused by UV exposure, hair oils and general aging. It will greatly reduce the effectiveness of it.

Here's me in 1983. I still have the bike, a Trek 720; it looks different, but I still ride it. Most of the components have changed, but not the saddle.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3113/...74346f61_b.jpg I still have the jersey, and that fits too, but I don't wear it.... |

I'm not sure about that. So far the only source of that comes from helmet manufacturers. Someone mentioned commercial sea floats are used for years and years exposed to salt water and UV every day and the foam still is intact.

But do they use the commercial sea float foam in helmets? There are thousands of different formulations of foams out there. Everything from a styrofoam cup, cheap foam coolers to insulation used in freezers or buildings. If the manufacturer suggests replacing something after a certain date, I would hope they know what they are talking about. Making many items UV stable adds to the cost. I am sure they could make a bike helmet that would last 100 years, but if they did they would kill their market and the price would be prohibitive.

It wasn't cooler back then, that's for sure. Here are a couple pictures of me in 1982.
I forgot I ever had the Brooks on my racing bike. I broke my super light Avocet saddle and had this as a sub. I think I'm looking grumpy in this picture because my butt hurt from the Brooks. Actually, it was after classes, senior year. I was taking 1 1/2 times as many classes as I needed to graduate. So I was tired. Criterium Setas on a training ride. This is Ellet valley outside of Blacksburg Va. http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/g...raceimg003.jpg Suffering in a bike race in North Carolina in '82 http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/g...ceimg002-1.jpg That's still my racing bike. I'm thinking about alternatives though. I don't still have the Bell Biker. Gave it to my brother in law back in the '80s some time. Hopefully he threw it out. |
Actually I'm kinda sorry that there aren't any pictures of me on a bike from back in the 70's.
I was in my early 20's, looked at least seven years younger than that, and was a rabid glam rocker. Which meant I wore more makeup, and was prettier than most of the girls I dated. And yes, I spent more time working on my eye shadow than on checking the bike over before a club weekly Sunday afternoon ride. Wool shorts, wool jersey, leather shoes with nailed in cleats. Helmets? What were they? |
^^^beautiful viner. I sometimes ride with a guy who has used his since the early '80s, too. You'll have to post pics of it as it is now, someday.

Keep em coming! i love this thread!

Awesome, Ellet Valley is practically my back yard I see those mountains all the time in your picture, has not changed much down there. Still a beautiful place to ride. Did you ever do any of the local races back then? From what I understand there was a race that finished up top of Mountain Lake in the 80's. Then of course the Tour Du Pont finished in Blacksburg through '95 or so.
This thread is great! Keep em coming. |
ok, all I have to say is that some of the pics of you teen age guys take me back a few years. Since I am female and I graduated in 1982 you all are looking just like you should and I might add mighty fine.... since I want to revel in my youth and not admit that I am growing old... so from my perspective I would have dated anyone of you of you 17-18 year old guys... heheheh at least the ones that were 17-18 in 82ish time period. LOL you are all looking good to me. Perhaps posting now pics would ruin some of the mystery but then again maybe not. I just have to say that you all were a bunch of good lookin studbolts IMHO. But this is a fun thread, I would love to see more pics of folks... however I have none from that time period that are digitized so nothing to post here. I also did not ride back in the day, I didn't get my first real bike until after 1990. Well thanks all for sharing this has been fun.
