I found this picture while cleaning out old pictures. It is from 1984. We are awaiting our start in the cycling leg of a team triathlon. I'm on the red Colnago which I still have and my friend Mike is next to me on his Alan. Those are some short shorts, but not as bad as #86!!!

Yah, we did look like that and it was just fine. Great shot.

Down at the University, I still see older profs wearing helmets like #86 is wearing.

I would hope not! At least not the original ones. IIRC they stopped making the Bell Biker almost, if not over 20 years ago. I still have mine but there is no way I would wear it.

I don't know if there really is anything wrong with an uncrashed Bell Biker. I suspect pictures taken now will look just as strange in years to come.

I worked in a bike shop on the main pedestrian path from campus to downtown. Let's just say there were people wearing incredibly short gym shorts back then that should have been wearing something more modest. I think gym shorts were killed off by spandex though.

1982 or so...

I can't post a picture, but I shudder to think how many
races and centuries I rode with a "Hairnet" for protection ...

Yeah, I know ... :crash:

The deterioration of the rigid foam inside, caused by UV exposure, hair oils and general aging. It will greatly reduce the effectiveness of it.

Wow, cool! Me about 1975 on my chrome Carlton; Point Reyes.

Couple more I found. With my wife, and me at Great Western Bike Rally, Paso Robles circa 1985-90. We went quite regularly then, before our son came along...

HIPSTERS!

things don't really change, do they?

oldbobcat 01-19-09 11:37 AM

Did an Olympic-distance tri in '85. I'm surprised they let me ride with a hairnet.

I avoided using the hairnet as much as possible, and hard helmets completely, until my wife made me start wearing on in '93.

Jeez, I don't have any pictures but I'm sure I looked at least that bad. Except I would have wearing cut-off shorts and a T-shirt instead of cycling attire. Did they even have helmets back then? ;)

divineAndbright 01-19-09 01:00 PM

Other than the awful looking helmets (coulda at least wore a hairnet style!) all is good ('cept for the ones wearing baggy shorts!).

CV-6 01-19-09 01:36 PM

I still ride the bike and the saddle. Not much else is the same.

Best thread I've seen on here in a long time!

is it just me or did everything look cooler before i was born (1983)? all the men had serious mustaches and the bikes were lugged.

ricohman 01-19-09 05:09 PM

I'm on the right. Touring in 1982. I was 17 at the time and the tour was about 1350km.

Wow, I'm glad to see so many replies with great pictures. If I remember correctly, the helmets we are wearing are BRANCALE (sic). After hairnets I tried a Bell Biker, but I had to tilt my head back too far so I could see!!! Our Jerseys are from a long gone team, Velosport Davenport. The person with me was a race photographer for major publications including Velo News. I'll see if I have a picture of our most famous member who raced for 7-11 in their glory days. I really sucked at racing. Cat 4 was the lowest then, but they may have developed Cat 5 because of me.
