Chrome Nut

Hi,
On my bicycle where the fork part goes through the frame it is held in place by a nut as I am sure it is the same on all bikes.I think it is a 26mm. The frame is being repainted at the moment so I must measure it again when I get it back. It is a chrome nut that was used. I am wondering would anyone know of an online place that sells parts for older bikes, mine is an 87 Peugeot 5 speed. I am not having any luck finding one at the local bike shop. The original nut is badly rusted. I tried to clean it up but it still looks terrible. I will post a picture of it when I get the frame back.

The original handlebar tape was very thin. If my memory serves me correctly it was a little thicker than electrical tape. Anyone know where I could get 80's style handlebar tape.

I have cleaned up all the chrome parts as best I could. What is the best stuff the put on the parts to stop them from re rusting.

Thanks.

My local co-op has a bin full of these, but they of course are going to come in different sizes and thread pitches. If you or anyone else knows exactly what size I should be looking for I can try to dig one up and send it to you.

Considering the 1987 vintage of this peugeot, it's very likely the specs shown in the third row in the following table. If it's a 5-sp cruiser (with bar tape???), I suppose there's a slim chance it has the BMX specs in the first row.

A few minutes with a brass brush followed by time on a buffing wheel should clean up the nut just fine.

Here is a picture of the Nut. As you can see it is pretty bad. I took off the rust but what would I buff it with or is it worth doing. The nut from my measurments is 25.5 mm diameter and the pitch is 1mm. I hope these are available somewhere if it can't be brought back.

I have just discovered that there are headsets available. I didn't know such a thing existed. I could do with getting the whole headset. The question is the headset sizes. From the link that Lester of Puppets posted there is a guide to the sizes. The problem is I don't understand the terminology. The link mentions sizes of Steerer OD, Stem Diameter Steerer ID, Crown race inside Diameter and Frame Cup Outside Diameter. Could someone tell me what these are and where they are. Sorry if these are dumb questions but I have never done any work on a bicycle before.

I have take the rust off the nut but as expected a lot of chrome came with it. I can get a bench grinder but what does the buffing wheel look like. Is it a felt polishing wheel, or does it need to be something stronger. Do I need to use a polishing solution on the nut.

You're not going to have much luck polishing a chromed steel piece.

Why do you say that? Have you tried?
