What's Missing Here?

I've got this nice Shimano 600AX crankset but it appears to be missing some inserts where the pedals thread in or else it's made for the biggest mother pedal spindles in the known universe. What in hay are the missing parts and does anyone know where to find them? It's a total mystery to me.

THIS is what's missing.

But fear not, Loose Screws has adapters for $33, HERE.

Big-ass spindles:

bingo: it's made for the biggest mutha pedal bearings known to Man: they are *single* inboard and about 1" diameter...check out Velobase and I bet there's a pic. For a while there was an adapter offered that allowed you to run standard 9/16" pedals, but I have never seen a set for sale.

See my edit, above. Loose Screws has the adapters.

Wow, how strong can that thin layer of material around the pedal hole be? Looks pretty thin to me, adapter or not!

from what I have read, ^that^ isn't the weak spot in this design: it's that the single bearing wasn't up to the task and was prone to failure (wear or dirt/water contamination or both). But some folks used them for years with no complaints and were very happy with the lower position that design places the foot relative to the centerline.

OldFatGuy has two spare Dyna drive Dura Ace AX cranks with pedals, and a NOS insert in the original packaging. Drop him a PM if you're interested, he needs money for his new De Rosa.

Now, that's funny! They sell the adapters for $33, and the pedal set for $20.

Those pedals, though they will fit, aren't even close to the 600/Dura Ace dyna drive pedals.

The adapters will allow you to use a modern, clipless pedal, but it defeats the purpose of the design, IMHO.

FWIW, I've used the Dura Ace AX crank/pedals for 24 years on what was, until recently, my only bike. I replaced the bearings in the pedals once, but have never had any problems with them.
