Which saddle/seat?
Hi everyone, I am new on here! I have signed up because I have started restoring 2 of my Grandfathers bikes. One of them does not have a saddle. I was wondering if all you experts could suggest a suitable saddle so as I can keep a look out on eBay.
The bike was built for my Grandfather in 1939... I have the reciept It is a Track bike made in Peckham, London. I have been looking at Brooks saddles on eBay, but I am unsure which would be of the correct vintage and correct for a Track bike. There seem to be so many different sorts.
Thank you in advance. I will take some pictures so you can see what I am up against with the 'beasts'!

If your set on finding a saddle from 1939, all I can say is 'good luck.' If you are just looking for a good saddle to ride on, there are many choices available to you. Having a picture of the bike would be helpful, preferably also a close-up of the seat-post and the mechanism that holds the saddle on.
For a classic saddle that has changed little over the years, and has a British pedigree - you cant go wrong with a Brook's.

Hi, thank you for your reply I am not expecting to find a saddle from 1939, I just want one that won't look out of place on the bike. I want to conserve the bikes, not repaint or add anything modern... and then use them!

No one can see the saddle while you are riding it. Get one that is comfortable. Of course, it depends on how the saddle was supposed to be mounted to the post. A picture of the seat post would help.

I think a weathered, but not worn out Professional or Swallow would look suitable.

Here's a link to the 1939 Brooks catalog:
https://www.brooksarchives.info/brook...oks/cover.html
The B17 Champion was the saddle shown on the highest-end Raleigh of that time (though not a track bike). Note the Champion Swallow, which is a style of Brooks saddle still made:

Definitely a Brooks. British bike deserves British saddle.
I'm almost in need of pics though. I gotta see this bike.

So, is there any interesting history with this bike? Sounds neat as heck!

+1 on Brooks. They may look out of place on a 2009 Major Matt Mason Fisher-Price Lenovo with Hot Wheels, but on a lugged steel frame, they go just fine, and I'd imagine on a classic British bike, probably look like they belonged. And from what I hear, once broken in, the ride is pretty good.

Lizzie,
Don't listen to these laggards, they know not of what they speak. ( insert smiley face here).
A 1939 Track bike would have a B17 Sprinter saddle, or a variant of the B17 Swallow.
You might want to talk to Tony Colgraves, he repairs Brooks Saddles and has made some
excellent replica saddles, he sometimes frequents these forums.

I couldn't put the pictures on directly, something to do with being a newbie? I have got all the pieces except the seat. The man who made it painted it yellow during the war... so that it could be seen better during blackouts!

Probably not a track bike (as it has fender eyelets, lamp mount on the fork, pump pegs), but cool none the less. I'd just find the oldest, nicest used Brooks I could afford and use that... B17s are nice, and pretty common.

Lizzie, two questions for you.
Is this bike going to be ridden? If not, I suspect you could find a saddle that looks good but isn't good enough to ride any more.
And... where are you? I have a saddle I'd give you, but it wouldn't be worth shipping it across the pond. Anyway, I have a strong suspicion you could find one more or less locally.

Definitely needs a Brooks saddle; your choice which model, but I'd lean toward a Swallow.

Lizzie,
I edited your post to show the photo's. I think you used the link button ( the world thing above)
instead of the image (mountain postcard thing).
Nice bike! what does the headbadge say?
