New Wheelset: 700c Ukai Gold Tubulars to Sunshine Pro-Am Hubs

I just picked these up off of philly's cl and I am pretty sure they were a good deal. $30 for the matching set, my gut said take it.

Well, they are on my bed next to me, I'll upload some photos.

I believe this is a track wheel set but appear to have brake pad wear on the walls (slight).

Can anyone fill me in with more info on regarding these?

If they aren't a road set I'll put them aside for a later project. If they can accept brakes they are going on my 1981 Miyata 912 (which came stock w/ 700c)

Pictures here (keep scrolling through to view them all)

I think you did well. I saw them today and only passed on them because I was working late. Good score!

I think the pro ams were Sunshine's best hubset, but I could be mistaken. Determining if they are a track wheelset is simple, if the rear is threaded for a lockring, they are track wheels.

Correct! Sansin/Sunshine also made all of Suntour's hubs including the Superbe road and track hubs. I had a set of pro training Sansin track hubs that were buttery smooth. They were 28h so I ended up selling them. When they went under the tooling was bought by Suzue and they made the Promax track hubs from the tooling of the Superbe/Pro Am hubs. Well, at least that is what I have heard.

I see hollow axles for Q/R, they look to be road wheelset and not track.

thanks for the quick responses!

well, seeing as the rear is a 6 speed road hub these are going to look great!

btw, i have yet to clean the entire wheel set, but i clean about 1/16th of the rear and it hardly had a scratch!

more will come once they have properly mounted tires and are sitting pretty with a freewheel that belongs.

anyone know of a nice 6-spd freewheel (13-19 maybe) they can recommend I seek out? recommendations for tires?

Thanks for the info! I have one Pro-Am hub and while I knew it was nice it was on my grocery-getter beater bike. I guess I'll have to treat it better from now on.

regina

maybe... pics? price?

ideally i'd like a 13 just because 52-13 on a 27" wheelset is comfortable to me (young legs) with 14 being a little aggravating on the flats... but i am interested

i just got done cleaning up this wheelset, admiring and whatnot

so I look next to the "Ukai" sticker on the rim and see this little weird symbol or something engraved. i check the other rim... and then it hits me

it's an NJS stamp.
