Modernizing a Centurion Ironman?

Modernizing a Centurion Ironman?
Last week I posted the saga of my 1989 Centurion DS. See https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/510192-stupid-things-you-hear-lbs-pt.html
That thread has taken on a life of its own, so I decided to create another thread with some questions I have.
My friend really wants to have brifters, even though he lives in one of the flattest places in the world.
He has taken me up on my challenge to put brifters on the Dave Scott I gave him. I know Robbie was hoping he would sell it, but no such luck.
I have a 9 speed Dura Ace rear derailleur, so I decided to go with a 9 speed Shimano conversion.
That way, I can use the FD and cranks that are on it. I am really having a problem finding reasonably priced brifters, however. NIB ones appear to be going for more than 10 speed.
The first real question I have is whether I should get new wheels or just have the rear wheel rebuilt with a new hub. This would cost more than a new near wheel but the wheels would match and the wheels on the bike are in very good shape. The wheels, like the GPX components are gray, so it would be difficult to find a wheel that would be close to the front in appearance.
The next question is what to do with the Suntour GPX components I remove. This would be the RD, brake levers, rear hub, and cranks. ( I converted to compact cranks a couple of years ago and have the originals in a box, in the garage.) I may also replace the FD, if I can find a cheap one on the internet. The question is whether you would sell these as a group, individually, or just hold them until my friend gets the urge for a new bike again, so I can convert it back?
Are there any potential problems that I should anticipate?
