Sterling Questions

I got a Sterling rigid MTB out of a trash heap. Surely a hunk of hi-ten crap. It has dead Shimano trigger shifters and alloy Araya rims. I was just curious if anybody knows the history of the make.

From: South of Raleigh, North of New Hill, East of Harris Lake, NC

Bikes: Specialized Tarmac, Specialized Roubaix, Giant OCR-C, Specialized Stumpjumper FSR, Stumpjumper Comp, 88 & 92Nishiki Ariel, 87 Centurion Ironman, 92 Paramount, 84 Nishiki Medalist

I don't know the history, but I had a Sterling mixte pass through my hands and I've seen a couple other Sterling bikes. They are decent quality bikes, worthy of being salvaged if possible. The models I've come across were LBS quality, not department store bikes.
