Newer cranks for older MTB's?

I picked up an older Stumpjumper from the trash, I am not sure on year but I want to get rid of the square tapper for a newer design. Will newer MTB BB's work?

Thanks

in most cases yes. check the BB width, if it is 73mm as opposed to 68mm all systems are go for a modern crank and BB.

your bike looks like an 87 or 88 and may very well be a 68mm adding slight complications... why do you want to get rid of the current set-up?

I am going the SS route and would prefer if someone who is restoring a bike have good parts for that. Also I often break square tapper BB's. In a perfect world I could do a straight trade..... The bike is going to be a school commute and bad weather cruiser so I really don't want to ruin good parts

There's a lot bigger selection of BB's in square taper if you're going SS or Fixie. Sugino has a lot of cranks that would fit the bill. They're all square taper though. Is your bike spaced 126 or 130mm? Nice ride though.

With the U-brake and graphics that very much has to be an '88.

Just upgraded the crank on my Gary Fisher Gitchie Gummie to a Shimano Octalink model over the weekend. Only problem I had was that the bottom bracket was a 73 and I needed a 68 - once I dug up a replacement, everything was copacetic.
