I like how "never refurbished" is supposed to be a selling point at $2400. I've also noticed when people have his & her bikes, they think they can charge a lot more no matter the quality.

A unique little cargo bike here.
Note the position of the 3-speed shifter. Front brake only (plus probably coaster brake). Thus no cables running front to back.

When I was a kid, my mother had an Italian folding bike with that feature (shifter under the saddle). It makes sense for a folding bike.

Spotlightlighting the lamp might not have been the most brilliant marketing idea either.

I know about the giveaway, but I didn't know it was illegal to sell them. What's that about?

hmm not sure if this is considered Wacky or not, but i've never seen a Raleigh Professional w/ Colnago forks. The seller readily admits to lacking bike knowledge, but then states the bike 100% mint. hmmm..

And a Stronglight crank. Plus he thinks its a 1972 but the SN makes it a 1978.

i caught that too, but i was willing to overlook that.. until i saw the colnago forks

smontanaro 03-20-17 02:31 PM

I picked up a Conti Special on Chicago CL a couple years ago. The guy I bought it from rescued it from the original owner, who bought it on a trip to Italy in the 80s. The original owner insisted that he bought it in 1982 or 1983, but date codes on the crank and rear derailleur place it more in the 1985 timeframe.

I know that is a bit off-topic from the Raleigh/Colnago from 1972 or 1978, but it should serve to underscore the fact that our memories of events from 30 or more years ago can be suspect. Unless we were anal retentive types who took photos of everything and meticulously inserted them into photo albums with relevant notes, or maintained notebooks filled with copious notes about every bike thing we bought or sold, we are almost certain to get some specifics wrong from time-to-time... Or more often.

What's the old saying? "If you remember the 60s, you weren't really there."

Yes & No.

For my old Colnago, I can tell you within a couple of months when I bought it.

It was bought during a trip to Italy I took with my parents when I was in High School.
Spring.
Sophomore year in HS.
I know I spent my birthday there.
It all narrows the time when it could have occurred down by quite a bit.

And, a few details of the purchase, riding in Italy, and the rest of the trip are particularly significant.

Other details are harder, like remembering when I first installed clinchers on the bike. Or, when I bought the Sugino chainring, although I can remember the shop where it was purchased. I can narrow down the rear wheel eating my derailleur down to about a 2 year period.

Sometimes I wonder how people go about dating bikes.

1940s ROYCE UNION 3 SPEED VINTAGE BIKE - $125 (Springfield)

https://images.craigslist.org/00l0l_...MU_600x450.jpg

I have
1930s or 1940s VINTAGE ROYCE UNION 3 SPEED BIKE
If I had to guess, it is probably a 5 speed, and not a 3 speed. Easy enough to count.

Made in Japan. Was that while the USA was still at war with Japan?

Stem shifters? Were the Japanese so far ahead of Campagnolo and Simplex to be using stem shifters when Campy was just coming out with the Cambio Corsa?
