Grandis Bicycles any thoughts?
A local guy whom I see rather infrequently is possibly looking to sell his Grandis Bicycles. It is full Campy. I think he might want to take the parts of the bike. I'd probably like to buy the frame. He is a tall guy and so am I.
My guess is that it is a Reynolds 531 or Columbus bicycle. I've found very little info on the net about the bicycles. I'm guessing I could pick up the bike complete for a good price or buy it as a frame only for much less.
I am pretty sure it is not a gas pipe boom bike. Any photos would be greatly appreciated. I have seen all the ones that came up in a google search.

Bikes: '39 Hobbs, '58 Marastoni, '73 Italian custom, '75 Wizard, '76 Wilier, '78 Tom Kellogg, '79 Colnago Super, '79 Sachs, '81 Masi Prestige, '82 Cuevas, '83 Picchio Special, '84 Murray-Serotta, '85 Trek 170, '89 Bianchi, '90 Bill Holland, '94 Grandis
I don't think Grandis made any lower level bikes - and possibly not any mid-level ones. They are excellent - in my opinion, quite possibly the most under-appreciated of Italian frame builders. I'm sure most if not all were Columbus SL/SP, at least from the 70's into the 80's. I've seen a few from the 70's that are truly exquisite. The ones I've seen (and I owned one) from the 80's are very nice and retain some cool touches at a time when Italy was trending toward cookie-cutter stuff. Many have a distinctive engraved head tube with the Grandis logo as opposed to a headbadge. Many have a neat extended bottom bracket tang that involved some extra work in a place many people would never notice it, and a curved rear brake bridge unusual for Italy. I think they look just that bit extra distinctive while not being flashy in the least. On mine, the rear dropout faces were nicely chromed. I also like the Grandis graphic style. Very, very nice frames, and well worth seeking out. They tend to be real bargains.

Lovely Grandis showing the curved bridge and engraved headtube:

sweet! I think I'm gonna have to investigate this one. The problem is that the guy can only be found infrequently at a local bar...The good news is I could probably reach him one way or another. He is cleaning out his shed and wants to get rid of it.
Oddly enough he had a custom bicycle built for him with a 64CM seat tube and a 54CM top tube. He does stand tall but seems to have a short upper body. With any luck this Grandis will be my Italian dream machine. The california Masi didn't cut it. There was an uncomfortable top tube...Too cramped and not high enough.
This 62CM machine ought to be a tight but good fit.

I own the Webshots Grandis Superleggera (posted above by Picchio Special) - it is a beautifully built bike and if you have the opportunity to get one and it fits, is in good condition and the price is right, I would get it!

I agree that Grandis bikes are greatly undervalued. I have a friend in Italy that is looking at selling one from the mid-70's and it is truly beautiful. Maybe I'll be able to post some photos shortly.

I own two Grandis including the "lovely" one linked above. A key point was made by Citoyen du Monde, in that they are undervalued. That was my experience in purchasing both that I own. They are VERY affordable for such a great bike. There are many very good Italian bikes that are not well recognized by Americans and as a result you can obtain some great bikes for not so much money compared to Colnago, DeRose, etc.

I believe this to be from 1977-78 If anybody is interested in it, I can put you in touch with the Italian friend who is selling it. If I am not mistaken, it is a 57 cm C/C frame and apart from the rear derailleur which has been switched out with another one, it still appears as in these photos.

Grandis Information
SoreFeet - I'm several months late finding this site and your post, but if want more information on the Grandis I can try and help. I've got one I used for racing in the late 80's. To answer the tubing question, mine is Columbus SLX. I had it custom built so it has the old Modolo brakes, Campy super record derailleurs, Phil Wood bottom bracket, Mavic (tubular) rims, a Concor saddle, Cinelli handlebars and then the budget got thin so I went Specialized with the cranks.
But if you still have questions about Grandis from that time frame, I'll go into to the next room and be happy to tell you what details I can.
I loved racing on it - short, compact frame - stiff - but nice for the criteriums I used to do.
Contact me at my website or send me an email.
