vintage water bottles?

new bottles are so much more function over form.

have members here all stock-piled old retro bottles that can't fit ice cubes or taste funny?

post ur pics here!

can anyone suggest decent retro looking bottles? or bottles that look nice on a retro bike in general?

It's finding the vintage water that's really the challenge.

This bottle came with a Nishiki that I bought, I will never ever ever put it to my lips.

I don't go out my way to buy vintage bottles yet, but if on comes with a bike I buy it stays with the bike. Usually they are in too much of a fragile state to use :/

ROFL!

well, we have enough vintage air from tubes and vintage grease around.. this would complete the package, nicely.

Can the water be new?

I stopped using water bottles when the convenience store bottle became about the same size, and I can drop them in the nearest recycle bin.

Once in a while, a smaller one bounces out.

I think the older ones are cool, and had a Centurion one that simply disintegrated.

Scott, I imagine the challenge is to drink water from that bottle while the cork is between your teeth. But I bet you can do it.

I had one of those Cannondale plastic bottles with the velcro attachment. When I tried to wash it earlier this year, the plastic shattered in my hands. One less on the road now...

I have a clamp for one of those attached to a bike I got recently. I assumed it was for a water bottle, but wasn't sure.

Anyone wants it, it's yours.

I don't have any vintage ones, though I came across a neat old marinoni one all sealed in its original packaging at our clubs founders garage (hes been a marinoni dealer since the 70s right outta his garage).

That looks identical to the bottles they give you in a hospital to urinate in. Are you sure it's not made so you can forgo any rest-stops?

Thanks Neal! Actually I hold the cork in one hand, the bottle in the other and steer with one foot up on the bars.

scott, you need some vintage yarn attaching the cork to the bottle. That is brilliance at work.

This is an old bottle from COLORAL
Anodized inside and out, this one did not leach out an aluminum taste.
They still always scratched in any metal cages.
Many older aluminum bottles had odd (often larger) diameters.

A reproduction of a VERY old bottle style.
These were made by ELITE - the fancy bottle cage guys.
They were lined on the inside to protect flavor and prevent corrosion.
The antiqued plate is heavy solid brass cut in relief.
These bottles scuffed badly when placed in any metal cages
... and they were a slightly larger than usual diameter.

This is an old bottle from SPECIALITES TA (France)
Mounted here in an old cage from REG (Italy)
They were plastic... and tasted like plastic - like any similar modern bottles.

On my 1971 Schwinn Paramount P-15

These are current bottles from KLEAN KANTEEN
Available from Velo-Orange or even REI.
Stainless steel does not take on any nasty tastes and does not scratch easily.
I think they look nice on any vintage bike.
Available in a couple different sizes and with a few different stopper options.
Downside: They are a bit heavy... but so is water.

Shown here on my 1986 Schwinn Voyageur touring bike...
the cages are also modern stainless steel

Cheapest you can find...these are usually sold retail for just a couple dollars!
Really not a bad option at all (compared to many trendy modern shapes).
These generic bottles are made by California Springs
Just in basic plastic, easily found, and I can still fit most ice cubes.
They are sold in bulk to most local bike shops through several distributors.
Similar shape to many older plastic bottles from TA.
If your local shops have different colors...
you can even buy a couple to mix and match colors as shown below.

Black with red... on my 1975 Motobecane Grand Record.

White with blue... on my 1985 Peugeot P-18 "Mixte"

Basic all white... on my 1972 Motobecane Le Champion...
with a vintage chromed steel cage from Specialites TA

Stronglight, I love the light you photograph your bikes in. Open, airy and delicate. I can only assume it's the light New Mexico is famous for.
