TA mixed with Campy BB ???
I just opened up the BB on my 1974 Alex Singer and found that the spindle was a TA 344 while the cups, bearings and sleeve are Campagnolo.
The cranks are TA as well.
Was this common practice back in 1974, or was there some special reason folks did this?

I would suspect that the at some point the TA cups wore out nad the owner used the campi cups as they were probally easier to get and more likely more durable. also is it an odd size BB? french, swiss?

It's quite possible Campy didn't make the right size spindle for a TA crank back in those days but that doesn't explain why the entire BB isn't a TA. One possibility would be the cup quality may be better with Campy. The cups on all the TA BB's I've seen looked fairly crude but they came from lower end bikes so there may be better TA BB's out there.

All the previous posts offer valid explanations. In addition, the Campagnolo cups have a spiral channel cut into the spindle hole. The rotation of the spindle, in conjunction with the direction of the channel, resists the penetration of contaminants. This might be an attractive feature to the OP, assuming the TA cups had worn out prematurely.
