I have the feeling that once I get my UO-8 sorted out, it's going to be my most comfortable bike...long stem, comfy seat, soon-to-be downtube shifters, and 27X1-1/4 tires. Awesome.

An it was oddly interesting that when I searched for "pug king" in images.google.com, I came up with dozens of pics like that.

Finishing up work on my '62 UO-8. Here's some before and after pics. Still have some touch-up work to do, but I rode it today...probably the first time that bike has been ridden in 30 years.

Most of the parts are original to the bike. It took about a gallon of oxalic acid and a lot of elbow grease, but I really like the outcome.

Really a stunning restoration!

I like Peugeots, I have/had a couple UO-8's but I've still never ran across a 23" frame. I've got a nice 22" but it's just not my size.

Here are a couple photos of my 1972 (?) UO-8. 62 cm, I believe. It has a knock in the bottom bracket that I've yet to find...

Took it for a 5 mile ride today, and it was fantastic. Every position on the bars was comfortable, even in the steepest of gear, it had the stones to pull quickly away from stoplights, and it rode like a cadillac. Compared to the Aston Martin-quick handling of the Raleigh, this thing is a nice change. I'd love to get the bottom bracket swapped out for a cotterless system, but don't know if that's a viable option...

BTW...DEATH STEM!

https://mysite.verizon.net/vzerndgo/id28.html is a good page of u08's. I wonder how hard it would be to collect u08's in all the colours they came in?

I'm not at all into cheap Peugeots but that was definitely worth the work. Best before/after pics I've seen in a long time.

I'm partial to Gitanes myself, if you really want to start a French flame war.

I HAD a yellow 5 speed FFS UO-8 that I stupidly sold. Idiot me. Now that I found this board, I have come to realize that yellow peugeots of any model are rarer than hen's teeth...

Thanks for the compliments. I'm not sure what you mean by "worth" since I'm certain I'll never see what I put into this bike. Actually I bought this bike as a spare-parts donor for another '62 UO-8 frameset that I bought that's in much better condition, but alas is too small for me. So, I decided to concentrate on this one. I re-used all the original parts I could, including derailleurs, shifters, chainrings, hubs, rims, stem, handlebar, seatpost, brakes, and a lot of the small cable hardware, etc. I had to replace the spokes, chain, crankarms, freewheel, pedals, saddle and brake levers...either because they were too far gone, or they were not original to the bike in the first place. I soaked the chain for two days in acid, then another day in oil before I finally gave up on it. The freewheel had to be destructively removed from the hub with a pipewrench, and the non-original saddle and brake levers were replaced with period correct ADGA Chatillionaise and Mafac respectively. I had the frame powercoated and made the decals to match catalogs and photos on the Bikeboompeugeot and Peugeotshow sites.

I think the UO-8 is a true classic, and this one from the early '60's displays a level of craftsmanship in the frame lacking in the some of the examples from Peugeot in the '70's. In fact, one of the seatstay brazed joints on the UO-8 that I bought for my wife back in 1972 broke shortly after I bought it. After a lot of warranty discussions with the shop in Ann Arbor, I did manage to get the stay re-brazed and continued to ride that bike for another 35 years til I sold it about a year ago. I figure this one should last me another 35 years.
