Araya Road 821
Here's a scan of a marketing brochure (front and back) for an Araya bicycle, model "Road 821". In 1985, I purchased the exact model shown in this brochure, same color, same Dura Ace group. The retailer was a small shop just north of Pasadena, California, to give you an idea of where these bikes were sold. At the time, it might have been last year's model, or even a model from a couple years prior (I was young and poor, so I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't on sale). I'd date it 1982 to 1984...if someone knows better, please correct me. I fondly remember this bike and its components to be very light and responsive. It probably road better than the Bottecchia Columbus SL that I ultimately replaced it with five years later. But, alas, it isn't Italian!
This post is a follow up to another Araya thread I commented in a few weeks ago. Rather than post there, I figured this very high-end model deserved its own thread. I hope this helps those looking for information on this niche brand/model.

The Retailer...
Well, I think it was in Altadena! I assume you may know something about the shop. I'd forgotten the name of the town, but seeing your location reminded me of it. I think it was a guy's name...it was recommended to me by a guy who used to work there. Give me a multiple choice.

Sorry, I wish I could give you a multiple choice. I've only been up here for just over three years. All the places I frequent are mainly in Pasadena, Arcadia and Eagle Rock. There is a small bike shop far up on Lake but it appears to carry cruiser type bikes (not really me). Haven't checked it out yet.
BTW, I noticed you're working on a Masi Nuova Strada. I have a red '83 Nuova Strada and it handles soooo well.

I worked in a bike shop during the late 70's and early 80's that sold Araya. Back then the model numbers were 30M, 35M 45M (the highest level Araya). I moved to work at Yellow Jersey around 1981 so lost track of Araya afterward.
Araya made a wonderful/affordable bike. It was just a bit less elegant than Fuji, but a solid well designed brand.

I have a 1982 Araya Road 823 which must be a lower model than the 821 based on the inferior tubing spec. Still a nice bike to ride.
