I've broken a couple of aluminum cranks, but I haven't broken a carbon one yet (I only really have experience with campy). It'll hold up fine, and it will definitely look good. This tribe comes from a long line of tweekers...always swapping out one perfectly good thing for another. Just like putting that Olds 455 in the Henry J...

Keep it all original, or hotrod the crap outta it.

BTW, you need to do penance because you stole that crank!

Oh man, retribution from the CV gods! I am being punished! None of my allen wrenches fit in the crank bolts to take it apart and clean it...the Record bottom bracket it came with requires some special tool...and you can't even get at the bearings to grease them.

Maybe I should cut my losses and just nail the stuff on the wall above my bench. I could still look at it, and the only tool I'd need is my trusty hammer.

Nah, the guy was just real nice. I emailed him and said I had the joneses for a Chorus crankset, and if he had a BIN he could put on there, I'd come over right now with the cold hard cash. He was happy with it. He got a lot of use out of the crankset, too. Hell, it'll probably take me the rest of my life to put the miles he put on that thing in one season.

Does that chart apply for parts like cranks and derailers too or just whole bikes? ;P

the chainring bolts are torx t30's. Don't use an allen wrench, even if it looks like it'll fit. You need a campy bottom bracket extractor, a park bb-5c. It also works to remove Campy cassettes, if your desire grows (the upper line of campy wheels have carbon hubs; the tippety top has carbon rims, too!)

Thx. I'm fine upgrading the drive train, since I was there back when they sucked so bad. The rest of the bike, thanks, I'll stick with vintage.

Those have nothing to do with bikes, but yeah, I will never own any of those.

The funny thing is that I worked in a composite materials fabrication lab during college. Maybe I just did too much destructive testing....

The question is, are you really anti-carbon or just anti-wasting$$.. for many of us I'll bet its the latter. If I can score a deal on a reputable affordable carbon piece, why not. If its one of those Benjamin-per-ounce-saved deals that's another story.

The carbon atoms are bonded together in microscopic crystals that are more or less aligned parallel to the long axis of the fiber. The crystal alignment makes the fiber very strong for its size. Several thousand carbon fibers are twisted together to form a yarn, which may be used by itself or woven into a fabric.[1] Carbon fiber has many different weave patterns and can be combined with a plastic resin and wound or molded to form composite materials such as carbon fiber reinforced plastic (also referenced as carbon fiber) to provide a high strength-to-weight ratio material. The density of carbon fiber is also considerably lower than the density of steel, making it ideal for applications requiring low weight.[2] The properties of carbon fiber such as high tensile strength, low weight, and low thermal expansion make it very popular in aerospace, civil engineering, military, and motorsports, along with other competition sports."

Have broken steel framed tandem twice (Reynolds 531); broke a steel experimental fork on a tandem.
Currently have 25,000+ miles on our full carbon fiber tandem (with c/f cranks too).
Anything can and will fatigue . . .

It sounds sacrilegious. I'm glad there aren't any, like, pastors who could send me to hell on this forum.

But I'm starting to have trouble resisting the temptation. If you're going modern, might as well go really nice modern.
