Miyata 710?
Hello there,
I have an old miyata that I bought at a garage sale for $90. Unfortunately it was a bit damaged and does not have the original paint (mind you it i have stripped the new stuff because of soooo many chips). I am not 100% sure if it is a 710 but after some research I think it must be.
Under the paint i removed there was some evidence of red and yellow paints in spots that are hard to strip e.g. the last person to strip it couldn't get everything.
The components were as follows (some are being replaced because they were messed up pretty bad):
Bar: SR Custom
Headset: Tange Falcon
Cranks: SR 305?
Derailleurs: Both Suntour Cyclone MK II
Shifters: Suntour
Wheels: Araya 20A (i believe)
Brakes: Dia Compe 500
Brake Levers: Shimano 600 Arabesque
Hopefully this will give you some hints. Also at the top of the fork it says Miyata and the serial number is (i'm not sure what the letter reads) :
(E?)324395
Please let me know if you think this is a 710 and what year you think it may be. Thanks. (I'm banking on an 84)

Well, if you've read the serial number correctly, it's circa 1975/1976. However, Cyclone MKII would place it post 1980. The components could be replacements. It's time for pics, to see it can be identified via frame details.

Alright here are the pics. They're not great quality because they're from my phone because I can't find my camera charger. Oh yea and all of the paper towel was for some CLR I through on the frame haha:

Definitely 1984 or 1985. Based on components, that should make it a 1984 model 710, as you originally suggested, but I would have expected the serial number to start with an M or N.
Also, is that blue paint inside the head tube? If so, that would point towards a 1985. For the 1985 model year, Miyata switched to a two letter, serial number prefix. It's possible they forgot to stamp the leading letter. The only wrong component for 1985 would be the crank (beside the levers, which are wrong for both years).

Thanks!
Thank you so much for the info. That is indeed blue paint however it was not the original paint colour as I found yellow paint under it in some areas. Under that there was red paint just before the primer so I am assuming that the original colour was a nice red. Thanks again!
