I do take a different approach at garage sales. My thinking on a garage sale is that offers are fine and expected. My last offer was on a Nishiki mountain bike. It was late in the day, they were asking $15 for it. I offered $10 which they accepted. I can't believe I just didn't give them the $15. But it is kind of how garage sales work.

I really don't mind an honest offer, lowball or not. The ultimate choice to take it is mine after all, and I know I would jump without hesitation on the chance to get something for half of the posted price. I do make lower offers, but try to keep it realistic. If it's worth about half of what they're asking, I'll give them my number and what I'm willing to pay so they can call if it doesn't sell.
I do dislike when people seem to feel that you owe them a discount because it's not exactly the right size, it's a gift for their kid, or because they drove a ways to look at it.
Other 'offers' I've had. "I really only want the rim/derailer etc, will you sell just that and how much do you want for it?" (Hmmmm, bike's listed at $150, so for just the rear derailer, how does $125 sound?)

Of course, when I get there, said seller insists that it should be $450 because he switched the fork with a carbon one.

Yeah, okay.... Gimme $80, and $80 for shipping, and it's yours. There's a $65 disassembly fee, though.
Yeah, the late model Wal Mart stigma is a big part of it I bet. The worst part of it now? An hour after
his 300 yard test ride, the front tire was flat. It would have poetic justice if I had sold him the bike for $80, hehe.,,,,BD
Not that it has any bearing on the value, but I paid less than $40 before tax.(pawn shop). If I saw it at the flea market for $160, I would think it was
a fair price for someone that wants to just ride it. I would not have made a scene or anything, I just wouldn't have bought it.
