Little Darwin 07-25-09 09:03 PM

Darwin is my first name, and was also my father's. Parents were divorced when I was very young, and a few decades later when I reconnected with my father's side of the family at a family reunion, I was called Little Darwin... Even though I outweigh dad by about 150 pounds.

I liked the irony of it, so I decided to use it as my login name.

Grand Bois 07-25-09 09:44 PM

I couldn't use my name because I might be mistaken for this guy:

Dirtdrop is just the name of the stem I had just bought.

I was tempted to use Emmalee's Dad because that's how I was known to the kiting community.

smorris 07-25-09 09:59 PM

First initial + last name. Pronounced as one drawn out syllable, sorta like the campfire desert rather than two distinct ESS Morris sounds. I've been signing drawings (mechanical, I'm a draftsman/designer) like that since about 1969. First used the user name "digitally" on Cleveland Freenet in the early '80s, and on AOL way back when there were less than 25k members. It's my handle on every forum I'm on except one Subaru board, where it was already taken.

I always liked the Beatle's Come Together.

Also, it seemed to go nicely with the premade avatar's straw boater.

Mine is a reference to something I found amusing in a documentary I like called 'The Cruise.' If you like NYC, it's worth checking out.

DavidW56 07-25-09 11:20 PM

My first name, initial of last name, and year of birth.

I don't get the avatars. Why is cb400bill's icon a British Petroleum logo?

BP are my initials.

unworthy1 07-25-09 11:28 PM

unworthy one...'cause I am.
Actually came about long ago when my first ISP wouldn't accept my entire too-long last name so I kept the last 6 letters and tried other prefixes until this one was accepted.
My avatar is by Marcel Duchamp.

Pompiere 07-26-09 03:22 AM

I am a volunteer firefighter and a few years ago I got a mug with "Firefighter" printed in several languages. Pompiere (Italian) is easier to spell than Ugnishumun-odhikari (Hindi). I don't have any Italian bikes, so maybe I should change to Sho'bo'shu (Japanese).

Neal, please explain your mysterious avatar. (picture under youyr user name.) (you usually have something interesting)

That was just a pic that a bike club friend had attached to a message he sent out to the group.

I needed a change from the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile.

RapidRobert 07-26-09 10:11 AM

Ever since a day in the mid '70s when my father, driving home from town, passed me also heading home on my bike, about five miles away. Apparently he was impressed with the speed at which I arrived after him, because he's laughingly called me Rapid Robert since then. As a young man in Northeastern Iowa in the early '30s, he knew the famous baseball pitcher of that name. Despite his hatred of essentially all things sports related, his use of that name as a greeting for me to this day is a real treat every time I hear it.

Noah Scape 07-26-09 10:32 AM

Back when punk rockers were renaming themselves with morbid, hostile or offensive names (e.g., Sid Vicious and Johnny Rotten) some friends and I had an on going list of potential punk names. Noah Scape was a favorite of mine. It was either that or Colin Sick.:p

geekrunner 07-26-09 11:36 AM

Great idea for a thread! My name is Dave Gardner, but when coming up with a handle for web forums, tried to come up with something that defines me. so the "geek" comes from my IT computer work (along with my general geeky/dorky/nerdish nature) and the "runner" comes from my 25+ years of running. "geekrunner" just rolls off the tongue! My avatar of a roadrunner with running shoes represents my membership to my old hometown's running club, the Club Kokomo (IN) Roadrunners, where I cut my teeth in competitive road running and racing. I use "geekrunner" for most of my other forum memberships, except for the occasional site that uses my email address, and our local mountain bike club's site, where I just screwed up and used my real name inadvertently.

As always, your geek :D

Can't sing a lick.
Can't dance, either.

I don't post much but........I've had this handle for years. Spent many years affiliated with the B-17 Texas Raiders.

jgedwa 07-26-09 02:13 PM

My reason might be too lame to bother mentioning, but since everyone else did, so will I.

My first email account (about 1991, or so?) at a university was assigned to me as: jgedwa@indiana.edu. From the first letter of my first name, the first letter of my middle name, and the first four letters of my last name. So, since then, I have often used that string as my on-line identity.

Bionicycle 07-26-09 03:04 PM

Bionicycle is a combination of Bionic & Bicyclist... About a year before I joined the forum I had my left hip replaced,(ergo the start of my fondness of Mixtes, and step through frames). My wife used to joke and say I was going to be the new Bionic Man, but I used to say.. "no I would be more like the description of Darth Vader.. He's more machine than man now, twisted and evil..." But, somehow the Bionic thing won the day: I could never seem to come up with anything that sounded good using a Darth Vader reference...:( My doctor says I'm going to need some more metal replacement parts in the not too distant future, so I guess it's a good name for me. :)

Bam42685 07-26-09 09:57 PM

I just used my initials and my birthday. I've been using it since I got my first email account about 13 years ago and it stuck. I've tried to use different names but I can never remember them. I can no longer sign into an upright bass forum I used to frequent because of this.

T-Mar 08-01-09 04:10 AM

Nickname given to to me by the sister of my roommate at the World's Championships.

gnome 08-01-09 05:04 AM

my nickname from high school. I use it wherever possible online. I'll put my first name in front of it if some tea leaf has half inched gnome.

cycleheimer 08-01-09 07:00 AM

Good question! Must have had one-too-many German beers that day!
