Toggle cam brakes?
[cross-posted from Mechanics when I realized I'm more likely to get an answer here.]
I was writing up the section on Roller cam brakes in Wikipedia and while looking for a good picture I ran across a thing called a "toggle cam" brake. I've never seen one - and Sheldon makes no mention - but from the few pics it looks like a one-sided roller cam design with a slaved arm (how?). Anyone know how these operate? How common they were? Good or bad? I also found a reference to a "sabre cam" design. I believe the front brake on this bike (click on the thumb of the front brake for a pic) is a sabre cam. Anyone know anything about them? |

Thanks for the link! I've actually seen the site before yet lost track of it.
Just to help them along, here is what the webmasters need: "im looking for pics of: scott superbrakes shimano dura-ace/600 ax calipers jeay brakes (france, 1940s) lefol calipers (france, 1940s/50s) hooker tt brakes and anything else unusual" |
Toggle cam are kinda like Rollarcam, but with a modification so the brake cable doesn't has to come from the middle. Makes them ideal for small MTBs with a short seatstays where there is not much room. You easily recognize Toggle Cam as opposed to Roller Cam, because of one wheel instead of two and a half, modified cam.
My WTB Phoenix has a Toggle in front and a Roller hidden under the chainstays. Tech explanation incl drawings >> http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/gal...2_itemId=45594 Pic of 600AX calliper >> http://farm1.static.flickr.com/185/4...16f65b10c8.jpg In fact AX brakes are very much like a Roller Cam. |
So what about these odd calipers made by DiaComp?

Don't they automatically adjust for brake pad wear?
