Huret RD

I aquired a Raleigh Sprite 27 a couple of weeks ago....started cleaning it up some today. The rear derailluer is a Huret Allvet? The 2 "cogs" on the rd are red and have no teeth. Am I missing something here or is this supposed to be this way?

Bikes: 1986 Alan Record Carbonio, 1985 Vitus Plus Carbone 7, 1984 Peugeot PSV, 1972 Line Seeker, 1986(est.) Medici Aerodynamic (Project), 1985(est.) Peugeot PY10FC

Huret used plain plastic discs for RD jocky wheels on some of their derailleurs, instead of gears. Most notably on their uber leicht (and ridiculously flexy) "Jubilee" racing model.....I guess at least they're mostly all metal unlike the goofier yet, Ofmega all resin (plasteeeek!) racing derailleur from the 80's. the French certainly does not have a monopoly on bicycle component weirdness!

Yup, and they have ball bearings in them, which cost extra and made them spin better. If it had a shifter that was well mated to the derailleur, it worked quite well, and it was extremely durable.

Bikes: 1980 Masi, 1984 Mondonico, 1984 Trek 610, 1980 Woodrup Giro, 2005 Mondonico Futura Leggera ELOS, 1967 PX10E, 1971 Peugeot UO-8

Those little wheels are only there to guide the chain onto and off of the various rear sprockets, not to transmit any pedaling power. Teeth there really serve no purpose.

On a different note, I don't know how your market is, but the NYC market for Raleigh Sprites seems to have gone crazy lately. From what I have seen, they seem to have doubled in price since late spring.

Some markets have seen used bike prices go insane, particularly the cities where many people cycle, such as Boston, NYC; Portland, OR; and Davis, CA.

it is worse than you know $150 dollar schwinns that should be $50-$75 at best

I have the same model RD from my 74 Sprite 5 and it has jockey wheels with teeth the rd and maillard fw were so bad I ended up going single speed until I can find a suitable 3spd wheel on the bay

That's good, since I have a Sprite mixte.

As no one else has noted, I'll say it outloud: Huret Allvit's are horrible derailleurs. Ick. Nasty. Yuck-O!

Nice looking Sprite! I looked here to find my mixte is from 1977...

I'm still not sure what my RD is, though...maybe an Allvit missing it's label?

Unfortunately I agree with the above post. Huret's were spec'd on tons of bike boom bikes. Replace it with a low end SunTour or Shimano derailluer and - voila - thousand times better shifting.
