Ringing your own bell?

For you vintage bell users..I use a nice brass bell from either Riv or VO, I can't remember which. It pretty constantly rings itself while I'm riding. How rude of it, right?

Does anyone have any tricks for keeping the bell from ringing itself while still being able to easily ring it yourself should you like? Or is there a vintage looking neat-o bell somewhere that you've used that doesnt ring itself until you provoke it?

I'm all ears.

I kind of like mine ringing itself. It's like an audible "rough road" alert. As if I needed that feature.

Bikes: 1995 Trek 520 is the current primary bike.

Not at all what you're looking for but I recently ordered a couple of these:

Googled up the image, QBP and probably other sources can get them.

Are you talking about the lever or the spring version of the Japanese bells? My lever-version bells don't self ring. Maybe I just don't ride on rough enough roads.

Bikes: Giant Excursion, Raleigh Sports, Raleigh R.S.W. Compact, Motobecane? and about 20 more! OMG

I use one of those mondo DING-DONG bells on a couple of my bikes, never noticed them ringing themselves. I did have one of the smaller ones where the top would come unscrewed and it would start ringing, bit of loctite fixed that.

Bikes: I hate bikes!

I snagged this one off of a flip a few years back. VO sells one just like it in brass. It does not ring when I hit bumps, like the more "tradtional" style. That ringing drove me nuts!

here's the culprit:

and some people from this site who rode with me earlier this summer should be able to attest to the noise...

Try mounting it horizontal and see if that will help. I have the aluminum version on my "city" bike and ride some pretty rough roads with it and have never noticed any rings.

Get the lever ringer as shown on the VO site and it will eliminate the problem. It's also easier to use and sounds better. The aluminum bells sound terrible!
