Bought a Raliegh

Had one of these when it was new.

Now I've got another. Date on the hub is 72. I actually paid money for this, it was on CL for $50, miamiJim probably saw the ad too. Me, I'm going to refurb and ride so didn't need a screaming deal.

I'll find out if the paint will salvage with polishing, the fenders and chain case probably need painted, we'll see. My plan is to keep it original but I'm not going to fuss a restoration. If something needs replaced I won't feel at all bad about using modern-ish parts and shedding a few pounds. I've already got a cafe/path/racer/scorcher so I'm not worried about that either.

Sadly that bag looks beyond recovery and the leather on the saddle is completely shot. If I could find a shaped hide for it ....

Should be a fun project. Of course I will keep everyone far more informed than they want or the project deserves.

Looks a bit rough but salvageable. I would wash the paint and fenders down with mild detergeant then coat it with gear oil overnight, then wipe it down the next day, should bring the lacquer back to life and coat any rusty nicks and keep them from getting worse. Oxalic acid on the chromed stuff.

Hey, I find that to be a thing of beauty!

A few weeks back I 'overpaid' for a 1950 Raleigh Tourist with full chain case in great cosmetic shape. Later they were called the DL-1, but catalogs from the '40's refer to it as a Model 2. When I get it roadworthy and my later women's Tourist back together, my daughter and I will go for a leisurely ride thru the park for all to gawk at.

"Gear Oil"

Tell me more about using "gear oil over night to bring back the lacquer". I've never heard of this technique before. Do others use this?

Thanks

Just looked at the title. I'm reminded of a recent news item, the English schools officials have recently decided to stop teaching the "I before E except after C" rule because there were as many exceptions and applications. Eventually I'll figure this out.

I have no plan to drench with oil. Though I have seen that improve the looks of things. I buffed a couple of discreet locations and find the oxidation comes off nicely but takes off what's left of the pinstriping. That's okay, I've got a sword. Just hoping the major lettering holds up.
