If you still haven't gotten the seat post free, do as Unworthy suggested and keep at it. If all else fails, you could do what I did below. It might take you longer due to the thickness of the post but be very careful and keep checking to make sure you don't start cutting the seat tube.

Sorry no updates on the bike though, i've been pretty busy with work.

I did get hooked on vintage bikes though :D i found another one right up the road from my house!

the quill (portion of the stem that goes into the head-tube of the bike) is usually 22.2mm diameter for all 1" headsets except if it's French. They use a 22.0mm diameter. This means you need to sand a little material off the quill to reduce the diameter and get it to fit in a French fork...it's pretty easy, just takes a little time.
