Thrift Store Hercules

So after work today I stopped at the local Goodwill and spotted a lady's bike leaning against a display cabinet. So, I have to go check it out. I quickly ID'd the SA 3 speed and thought it was a vintage Raleigh. Then I looked at the badge and discovered it to be a genuine, made in England, Hercules.

Looking at the price tag I thought "17.00, well it might be fun to play around with and then flip." Then I looked closer and thought "$77.00? No way."

It needs tires, probably tubes, brakes, and I'm sure a full lubrication. It is complete but grimy.

I thought Goodwill sold bikes cheaply. I left without it.

Anyway, here are some cell phone pics.

Bikes: to many to list

I would have left it there too.

Me too, plus it's a Raleigh built Herc which makes it less appealing to me.

If you clean that up and put new tires, tubes, brake pads, cables, casings, polish and rebuild, you could sell it for maybe $150 in Ann Arbor, on a good day.

3 speed anything goes for a good price here.

Bikes: Giant Excursion, Raleigh Sports, Raleigh R.S.W. Compact, Motobecane? and about 20 more! OMG

Looks about like the one I was just given for free a few weeks back. and mine didn't need much of anything to make it ready to ride.

Here too, but I paid $25 for a lot of 5 of them, with decent tires on four. One had a crashed f/f, so it was stripped and recycled.

Three have been sold, and one is still in the rafters.

Over $80 w/tax is nuts.

Bikes: 2015 Specialized AWOL, 2006 Paul Frank Cruiser, 1987 Specialized Street Stomper, 1980 Trek 412, 1979 Raleigh Sport,

Find out when they have there 50% day...
then go in and get it, I'm sure no one is going to pay 77.00 for a old bike...

Is that a scribbled line under the first "7?" It might be $17, for all you know - could be a mistake by whoever printed it. Ask the manager.

Kurt,

I only posted 1 pic of a price tag but they had at least 3 more on the bike. All were $77.50.

$10, tops. Even in Ann Arbor.

My experience with thrift stores is pricing is all over the map. No logic to pricing, which sometimes is great when you get something really nice, and sometimes it stinks when they want some ridiculous price.

I had to tell one goodwill that they were asking more for a bike (about 2X) than it was selling for at Target.

I agree +1000. A couple of weeks ago, there was a mint Miyata 112 mixte for a few dollars, and a beat old gas pipe Gitane for $80, complete with French threading and cottered cranks. Guess which I (my wife) got?

I am close to a college town, & bike riding is HOT. I went into a Salvation Army Thrift Store & in the back they had a Roadmaster 15 spd mountain bike. Needed quite a bit of work & was priced at $ 89.95 !!

$77.50 is a perfectly okay price. They want to sell it to someone who wants it, not someone who wants to flip it, and are willing to let it sit there for a little while. Shows good sense, I think.
