Non Clipless Shoes
 

I bought a pair of these shoes at the local walmart for 22 bucks.

They work really well with toe clips, are comfortable walking, and they have a stiff enough sole for use on long rides.
And they look a little like vintage bike shoes. I am really happy with them, especially for the price. If you are looking for an inexpensive pair of shoes for use with toe clips, check these out at your local wally world.
And, no, I don't work for walmart.

What size did you get? I have duck (wide) feet, and I have a hard time finding shoes that fit in my straps.

and it seems there's a new type of shoe they call a "motorsport" or "Driving" shoe. Who knew... apparently they can sell shoes to people under the pretense of driving in them...whatever... I've found that these types of shoes fit really well with toe clips and are available in many swingin styles.

I got size 9, and there is ample room for a larger size inside my toe straps. And the shoes seem pretty wide.
My only real concern about these shoes, is how well they will hold up. I guess for 22 bucks, if they only last a few months, I can't complain.

My theory is that low quality shoes are a bad value, in general. I can't draw for beans but try to picture a line graph where time is the x axis, wear condition is the y axis, and the line falls as it goes to the right. In theory shoes that cost $22 and last two months are no better or worse than shoes that cost $88 and last for eight months, because they both give you one month per $11. But there is more area under the curve of the more expensive shoes, over the line of acceptable wear. I'm not saying I never buy cheap shoes, but I tend to look for good value in most of my purchases.

I'm going to measure the girth of my shoes around the toe box. I think I need extra long toe straps.

I have strange feet. Most shoes don't fit my duck feet. And it's weird to have such big feet, because I'm only 5'9" (175 cm) tall. I guess I'm hard to knock down, with all the stability I have at the base. :wink:

I hear you... I got some Shimanos recently that are working ok, though had to get them a little long. Maybe some extra long toe clips now...

cravenmoarhead is spot on. i wear a pair of adidas adiracers. mine are about 3 years old at this point. they have a fairly stiff sole from the balls of the foot back and some flex in the front of the sole. i really like them for riding. driving on the other hand? how am i supposed to tell the difference... if i'm in a car more than an hour, anything is uncomfortable.
they're still producing the adiracers, in a fairly broad spectrum of colors if i'm not wrong. mine are a smooth leather, but i've also seen suede ones as well. i've had thoughts of picking up some red and white ones to match my bike... is that going too far?

I've got a suede pair of the Adidas "GoodYear" racers. They're great..still holding up well after 2 years of commuting (and occasional lawn mowing) thinking about trying a pair with the more breathable nylon uppers next time...if they make them less ugly.

* I did a little modification to make them even better, in case you're interested. The lugs on the sole protrude out laterally just enough to interfere a bit with the side of the toe strap. I took a utility knife (thick-bladed razor) a removed some of the lug material. The lugs are cast "rubber" and cut through easily and cleanly. I ran the edges over my belt sander to create a nicely contoured and smooth surface. All is now well.

To a large extent, I have given up my search for vintage leather cycling shoes because these fit and work so well (after the mod). If you know anyone with a size 48 Detto Pietro that is all laced and a full leather sole, I have them contact me. I may still buy them.

Thanks for the recommendation! After reading about them here, I picked up a pair at Walmart this afternoon, and they're perfect for me. They fit my toeclips much better than the leather street shoes or tennis shoes I usually wear, and they're more comfortable for both riding and walking. In fact, they're some of the most comfortable right-out-of-the-box shoes I've ever bought. I usually wear 8 1/2 Wide but regular size 9 in these was just right.

They used to make walkable touring shoes like these specifically designed for use with toe clips, straps and cage pedals. Note the little "cleat" ridges. These were sold by Performance Bicycle and I got them about 25 years ago. Still use them with my old school touring bikes.

Avocet sold shoes like those, too.

A friend of mine put Shoe Goo on his sneakers and made a slot in it, and that was his cleat for toe clips. A mighty clever idea, if you ask me!

Hey, Tom, I may have a shoe for you. I have size 9-1/2 EEE feet. For about a year, I've been riding in a pair of Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66s. They're really comfortable, light, fit beautifully into a set of toe clips, have reinforcing that keeps them from wearing out at the clips, don't smell, and I can wear them all day long at work.
I bought them at Macy's, but they're available from several places online, from about $50 to $80. Come in quite a few color combinations -- I have the gray/electric blue ones, that came with both blue and gray laces. So far, haven't worn out the first set of laces. The shoes are well made and quite durable IMO.

Any concern that the faux leather upper will not breath at all and leave one with a wet sweaty and smelly feet?

We stopped at Campmor in northern New Jersey recently. I convinced my wife to get SPD pedals and shoes. She got shoes that look like running shoes and are good for walking. I think they are also the Lake brand.

Next, I'd like a DRESS shoe with an SPD cleat.

Sometimes, I hate Shimano, but I gotta say, SPD is one of the best things they invented. Its potential hasn't even been exploited yet.

I'm currently wearing Nashbar SPD-type sandals. When they wear out, I'm getting genuine Shimano sandals. I guess I have a love/hate relationship with Shimano.

I went to many of the links shown on that page, even to thet Vittoria web site directly. The whole thing is BS. The Vittoria 1976 shoe is not really available, not even from Vittoria. It's all just a big come on. They appear to be offering the product but when you actually try to buy a pair, they are unavailable.

If you're talking about the Onitsuka shoes, I have not had any problems in this regard. I have sweaty feet (and overactive sweat glands everywhere else), and though I do use Gold Bond foot powder in my socks every day, the shoes have been in fairly constant use for about a year now, and they don't smell. The soles are thin, but they're apparently quite durable. Ditto on the uppers, which are supple, but seem to be resilient and tough. I really like these shoes -- so much that I just bought another pair.

My other favorites for riding are several pairs of Rivat shoes. I bought a pair about 20 years ago, and then recently found two more pairs on eBay. They have much harder, stiffer soles, and were meant to be used with plastic cleats, but I've never done that. I can't cycle without toe clips, and I can't cycle with cleats either. These are very comfortable to ride in, but not so much for walking. The Onitsukas are comfy for either one.
