How do you know?

I bought a wrecked 1971 Raleigh Sports over the summer for $20. It had been run over and the rear wheel was totally bent out of shape and pinned against the chain stays which were bent as well. I parted out the bike including the 3-speed S-A hub. My question is this. Short of rebuilding a rear wheel with this hub, how do I know if the hub actually works?

Bikes: Mostly English - predominantly Raleighs

It should spin, the axle should be straight, and no visible damage to the shell. As far as the speeds... I guess you would need to build it up.
