Handlebar tape

Anyone know if you can get the type of handlebar tape used in 60s or 70s? or is it acceptable to use modern stuff on old bikes?

Bikes: Cinelli, Paramount, Raleigh, Carlton, Zeus, Gemniani, Frejus, Legnano, Pinarello, Falcon

Do you mean cloth or plastic? Both are pretty readily available.

I prefer more modern padded stuff, even on my old bikes...

Bikes: yes

Search the UK ebay for Benotto handlebar tape; plenty of selection there.

Bikes: 1986 Alan Record Carbonio, 1985 Vitus Plus Carbone 7, 1984 Peugeot PSV, 1972 Line Seeker, 1986(est.) Medici Aerodynamic (Project), 1985(est.) Peugeot PY10FC

Cloth would be typical for those times. I used cloth for a short time on my 80's Peugeot before the padded vinyl type really caught on. I wrapped the bars with two layers to make them more comfortable, specially with the smaller diameter (French, Phillipe Guidons) bars supplied by Peugeot.
I found the plastic "Cello" type white bar tape that came with their 80's bikes looks good, but feels kinda nasty.

It's your bike. Use padded tape if you want. Or not. Tape is cheap, quick and easy to replace, anyway.

During the boom, cloth was typically found on better models, while entry level models used plastic bar wrap. Some manufacturers did use cloth across the entire product line, but plastic was very common on entry level models.
