I used to do a fair bit of duck hunting and deer hunting, but have stopped it this past few years. I also used to do a fair bit of firearm shooting, skeet shooting and pistol shooting, of course collecting and trading/buying/selling guns was always fun, but now am selling pretty much everything I have in it. I just don't do it or have the enjoyment of it anymore.

I love to fish, specifically freshwater panfishing with ultra-light gear. Luckily I live close to several places to pursue this hobby.

Cycling has taken over most of my hobbies and I would very much like to get into framebuilding. I have the space to set up a little shop and would love to just start doing it as a hobby in the next couple of years.

I do enjoy rifles. Similar to bikes in many ways - the mechanics - tolerances - hand work - tactile - concentration - mechanical aesthetics - etc. Here are couple of mine:

I seem to get into a hobby for a bit, then switch gears altogether and ignore the other hobbies. I do ham radio (mostly morse code), shooting (and just starting to reload), and cycling. I used to enjoy building scale car models (1:25 plastic ones), and I used to think I'd get into restoring cars (or hot rodding) but that's fallen by the wayside.

Although, if I went by what I do most of in my spare time, it'd be a contest between beer drinking and wasting time on the internet...

cehowardGS 12-26-10 10:47 AM

I have a few.. Think I already mentioned on posted the skydiving and roarracing motoryccles. Yeah, I got a big yap for a 70 year old!! (big old wrinkled grin)

Here is one of my others.. Oh, I reloaded and casted bullets for everything except 22 rimfire.. I mainly shot NRA 2700 point, 3-gun matches..I used a James Clark accurized 1911, and Marine Corps Accurized 1911, and a high standard 22 military.

Wow, when I'm 70 I want to be like that. Except for the motorcycle. Everyone knows two wheeled contraptions are dangerous.

I want cehoward to teach me how to do that roadrace gangster lean on my Harley!

Since we have seem to a member tendency towards shooting hobbies, I think I'm safe to post a pic from my distant, violent past:

This used to be my hobby, livelihood and life, 24/7, for 9 years. Man, was I into it. I'm the guy with the machine gun in the foreground.

I don't know if it counts since it's still cycling, but this is how I spend most of my time.
Watch it in HD and turn up the music.
I also do a bit of Photo but haven't had the money to develop this last sack of film until a few days ago, can't wait to see how the last year or so turned out.
This one is from back in '07 when I still had access to a BEAUTIFUL 1910's 11x14 Chicago Deardorff.

Almost forgot for you guys.
This is what I play polo on.
A Fleet Velo, Joust, built by Waterford specifically for hardcourt bike polo.
http://leagueofbikepolo.com/sites/lo...93c0c928b4.jpg
It's by far the nicest bike I own, and it gets beat to hell and back at least three times a week.
Quick recommendation, keep an eye open for Fleet Velo bikes in the coming months, good way to get a Waterford quality bike for far less money.

IMO, the motorcycle, even roadracing, is more safer than riding the bicycle in traffic..However, I get a rush out of both!! :D

We can see that is the REAL DEAL!! :thumb:

If you don't mind me asking, how long did it take you to come down off that edge and back to normal?

My projects and hobbies are in each others ways. I have been thinning out. Sold my 64 Allstate (Vespa) Sold off my RC airplanes although my old flying buddies are trying to get me to start flying electric with them. Sure like how much less mess there is.

I have a 70 LeMans convertible I need to put back together. I have a 400 on the stand ready to go in just lack time and funds. right now.

My wife and I are restoring her fathers 59 Airstream Caravanner she inherited but I need to get the Pontiac running so I can get the garage clear for the cabinetry work.
I was into hard core off road. loved fabricating but it got old wheel one weekend repair the next three.
I plan to do some offroad/expedition type travel and built up a 86 4runner, rebuilt the motor, transmission, regeared it with an Elocker out of a 90's 4Runner.

My wife and I want to make our next bedroom set. Love some of the styles of the stuff at Ikea but its all particle board. We want something heavy duty and on wheels. plan to make matched wardrobes with a 2x2 steel frame and birch inserts and doors. We would like to sell the ranch and move into a loft at some point. Probably something that will have to wait till we get my other kid through high school.

Wisco 12-27-10 01:21 AM

Um...hobbies? When I get done building bikes and selling parts for a living, I usually go straight to a bike project for myself or a friend. When I can tear myself away from the shop, I like to hike, swim in the lakes, go to heavy metal shows, and get lost in big tomes of history. Like the rest of you (or almost all it seems) I enjoy shooting, but I'm pretty close to being a complete novice. (Anyone have a line on a Ruger Mk II Gov't at a decent price?).

I gotta say, as a demographic, the members of this forum must beat the average odds pretty significantly of surviving a zombie- or otherwise- apocalypse. Knowing how to build and use both silent and fuel-less transportation and firearms...

In the meantime, I practice for the Apocalypse at something called Ring Game...yes, it's LARPing, of a sort. Three times a year, ~100 people gather in a state park and quest for the One Ring. This ain't no Dungeons and Dragons--depending on the character you pick (and I always seem to pick the hard ones) you have an excellent chance of spending five hours jogging through swamps, up hills, and through pricker patches while wearing plate armor. Best workout I get all year.

What does the acronym LARP stand for, L... A... Role Playing? Is there a web site or youtube videos or...?

ETA - nm, I checked it out on line. LOL! That was funny! I am a HUGE fan of everything/anything Lord of the Rings but it does not constitute a hobby.

Rather than start a brand new thread for no reason, I'm dredging this one up, since it had the most posts and someone already had the idea.

Besides the boom toys, motorcycle, and guitars, I have a couple of very C&V specific hobbies very few people are either involved in or understand. Certainly not anyone in my family!

First...old toasters -

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...cc044ea399.jpg
From left to right: Circa 1933 Sunbeam B5 Toast Witch, 1932 129T32 Edison 'Gazelle', and 1960s Proctor

Specifically, toasters with an art-deco theme (mainly late 1920s into the 1940s). This was a unique period in the American industrial revolution when the worlds of rapid mechanical innovation and modern decorative arts collided and produced (to me) some of the most beautiful industrial arts pieces ever made. This period will never be repeated again, since our modern world has streamlined costs in manufacturing even more. This 'decorative arts meets mass production' is evident in most goods from the era - appliances, cars, tools, signs, furniture, etc.

Next, vintage 'baccy pipes -

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...af7d3b0cf8.jpg
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...3f5aa53c20.jpg
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...f0f8a07a97.jpg
From top to bottom: Circa 1937 Frank Medico, 1940s Monark, and mid-1930s Kaywoodie.

...specifically American-only pipes from the 1920s-1950s. Like most other goods, manufacturing took a dive in the late 1950s and early 1960s as a lot of smaller producers started getting bought out by larger entities and corporations and a lot of cost cutting measures began. While fallen far out of favor, the pipe is as traditional 'Americana' as you can get, and due to is relative obsolesence, prices have never been better as these things are all but forgotten (near what they sold for, without inflation!). VERY similar to old, vintage bicycles - a lot of depreciation for the value, and the fun is all in the restoring (and occasional using).

3rd, vintage American stationary woodworking machinery -

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...080b7e967c.jpg
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...67643e563e.jpg
Not my tools, but I have the identical Craftsman floor saw above. The jointer - I wish!

Like all our old bikes, these tools have fallen out of favor amongst a society that has become out-of-touch with a DIY 'hands on' skillset, and is more interested in disposble tools you can instantly replace. However, most of these tools are far better, and far better quality, as they are usually multiple times the weight and stability of modern tools (most being made of cast iron). With some basic disassembly, electrical wiring and paintwork skills (2 of which we already have restoring old bikes), you can often find these fabulous old tools for pennies on the dollar, or even for free, and have yourself a functional work of art...just like our old bikes.

That's crazy. I'm into Toasters too. I use a Dualit Combi 2+1 for my daily, but I love breaking out the Toastalator to show off.

Portland used to have the Toaster Museum. They even had a newsletter. Wonder what happened to them.

Heywood Banks is a Michigan-based comedian and guitarist.
He's got a clever ditty about his love for toast for which he uses a toaster as his instrument.
He's still out there.

Just a peek at some of the other ongoing madness. I found another 70's made in West Berlin Klepper Kamerad today.....
