Very cool!

We build too!

Grady, that's gotta be a great way to bond "with the boys", huh?

My dad taught me - on aircraft - and I just gravitated to things with wheels as I grew up.

We do slot cars as well!

F1, some Indy, Trans-Am series, and Euro DTM racers.

We'll drive my poor wife our of her mind during the holidays, as we set up a track with 25 foot straights in our house, usually right through her living room.

Come to think of it, I might need to stop at the hobby shop on the way home tomorrow to see if there are any new cars in stock! :)

Kung Fu! I practice all the time, it's a great way to stay in shape over the Winter.

Building and maintaining MY "TEN SPEEDS".

My problem is my other big hobby is boating so cold, dark and ice just sucks.

XR2 12-22-10 02:00 PM

Keeping the motorcycles in shape. However I ride year round barring snow/ice. That has come early this season but could disappear so holding off working on them. Up until the last 2 years I'd tie flies for spring fishing. Thinking we'll spend some time on that this winter. Thinking of taking up X-country skiiing as well.

Photography is still a hobby although it feels more like a job now-a-days.

XC skiing is a fantastic sport if you can manage it. I liked waxless, metal-edged skis (Karhu XCD-GT's or their current equivalent). Skis, boots, poles, good gloves, a decent hat and a small nap sack with food, water and a camp stove and I am set for a full day in the country.

You can also take your XC skis to the lift-served ski areas and telemark ski down. Telemarking is a hugely valuable skill to know. You will also learn to skate, climb and hockey-stop. You will learn more in one day on a lift-served slope than a week or a month on trails. Plus, it is just uber-cool to be able to walk (ski) like a normal person on the flats rather than shuffle from across the snow.

ETA - Here's the current equivalent of the Karhu XCD-GT. This is a case of changing the graphics without changing anything about the bike, err, .... I mean skis.

I used to paint/draw/create:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...7_490061_n.jpg

I used to bicycle tour at least 2 weeks a year.

I used to rebuild motorcycles, Vintage jeeps, Mopeds, Italian Scooters.

I still go backpacking and camping when I can.

I still play music once a week at least.

I still run when I can stop eating long enough to do so.

These days though, these two keep me pretty busy:

Scale model supply?

I haven't gotten the itch to build yet this year but cabin fever usually kicks in and gets me pulling out the modelling supplies, Jake has gotten into it a bit but he doesn't want to learn to build by the directions and tries to build the way I do which is virtually impossible for a beginner with the way I just take parts from the bins and turn them into cars.

I used to do 1/72 scale WW2 fighter planes but I kind of got away from them a few years ago.

Let's see...

DIY tube audio. I've built a few things, but haven't done any building lately. I still have it to listen.

I play my Yamaha grand as much as my family can stand it. I'm just an old beginner really, started playing at 52 when I bought the piano for my kids. I took lessons for about a year, but work got in the way. Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven, Grieg, but mostly Chopin because my wife had a good Chopin book from when she played as a kid, and I have a large Chopin record collection (see above).

Home brewing, but it requires a lot of cycling to keep the weight off. That stuff is fattening. That 10% alcohol brew requires about 50 miles per 12oz bottle.

Kids, they just require a lot of time even though they are teenagers.

Sometimes this (French Alps):

http://fivenineclimber.com/images/jesper/standplads.jpg

..or the expensive version (Himalayas):

http://fivenineclimber.com/images/mi...ama-dablam.jpg

..and more of basically the same madness (Yosemite):

http://fivenineclimber.com/images/mu...23rd-belay.jpg

Above were the headline events. Mostly we just putter around on smaller features, like here (Las Vegas):

..and here (also Las Vegas):

Or we stay really close to the ground (PNW):

This is very classic material, the C&V of American rock climbing (New York):

And for those admirers of Italian steel, here's some Eye-talian rock:

More vintage material (sorry Dan!!):

WOW this really puts my little D3000 and N70 to shame.

Robofunc 12-22-10 07:46 PM

Jaysus, Jan--thats some precarious-looking stuff. Not for me--no way.

My non-bike hobbies are music (keys, bass, guitar, drums (poorly)), photography, design (also pays the bills) and general tinkering. I'd count food and beer, but those don't really qualify.

i make soap, beer, and i bake stuff. bagels and bread, mostly. i also intend to start brewing kombucha in the near future. If i had to do only one, it'd be the soap, b/c that's the only hobby that's been easily profitable. selling beer legally is expensive, and selling it illegally isn't worth the risk. I bake on a such a small scale, i could never turn a profit on it. But soap? Ppl love handmade, all-natural soap.

Thanks Jan! I have admired your woodworking skills for quite some time now.
What you do amazes me!

Iab you have some really nice pieces there, I would love to see more.

I do custom cabinetry and trimwork for a living, most of the furniture pieces I do are for friends, family or my wife.
They are usually at the end of the day or in the little free time that I have. I do not spend the time or put out the effort that I would like to on personal projects.
The good news is all my personal pieces are most always from scraps at the shop (just like what I paint on) so they cost me very little to nothing.
I do enjoy it.

Very nice stuff Jake...wish you were local, I would be happy to give you some work!

What are the door insets on that credenza? Looks like slices of paralam (sure it's not)...nice piece.

iab...Do you do the metal work involved as well? It's got kind a space-age meets deco thing going on...nice work.

Scale Model Supply rocks, no doubt.

I also find gems at the Hub, but I usually run out to the Richfield location.

Picked this up yesterday.

The boys were not happy that dad has a fresh car to start the holiday racing season!

Maybe Santa will be kind to them as well?
