What a great range of hobbies. As many of you obviously know being a hard core do-it-yourselfer gets you in all kinds of trouble.

restored & painted 1/2 dozen classic cars (62 vette, 63 T-Bird, 80 Trans Am, 69 Ford F100, 2 Willis Overlands)
restored 3 40s - 50s Farmall letter series tractors - painted one - 2 more to finish
rebuilding 2 old houses - one I live in - one was built by my great grandad
remaking old pocketknives - polish - custom scales - custom file work
I made these - they are pretty nice - gave them all away as family presents:
http://secondchancepocketknives.com/

now I'm building enough vintage bikes for 6 of us to ride at 2 different locations
my budget pretty much makes them have to be nice beaters

gotta stay busy right?

I ride vintage Trials motorcycles with a Sacramento based Trials club and also ride some AHRMA events as well. Primarily 1970's bikes that I lusted after while in high school (Honda, Ossa and Montesa). A nice group of guys and pretty serious, but good natured, level of competition for a bunch of 50 year olds! Best of all, it's allowed me to reconnect with my younger brother around something we both enjoyed as teenagers so long ago.

Sweet. I used to ride a Bultaco Matador in high school, and a friend had one of those bigger displacement Montesa's. Most everyone else rode Yamaha Enduros or Huskys.

[QUOTE=Poguemahone;11963500]I like this thread, so I'm bringing it back. I seem to collect stray dogs. This is our latest find, Tippy. She was left in a box by the trash to die, the box filled with her own waste. We found her (or, more accurately, Ben the big Shepherd did); she was skin and bones and weighed only three and a half pounds. She's a bit happier now.

Best off-bike hobby mentioned! Thanks for what you are doing to help out our furry friends, if I didn't travel for a living we'd have a whole barn full.

My off-season hobbies are all in storage for now. Like many on here I do shoot a fair bit; something of a professional interest and personal one combined. There are some interesting parallels between cycling and shooting. One that comes inmmediately to mind is how many people spend big money on guns they never learn to use properly, like buying a $10k race bike and riding 30 miles for your weekend "long ride."

I own some nice examples, a Ruger MkII Target, a Kimber compact .45 Ultra Raptor, and a well-built Bushmasetr AR. They're all in storage, along with my bikes (7, I think) except one, most of my good camera equipment, and my motorcycles ('95 1100 Virago and a 2000 Suzuki 1200 Bandit).

So, for now my winter hobbies are stationary cycling on the apartment patio because there's still ice on the bike trails in DC, and running. Pleasure reading between French homework and some drawing also fills my spare time.

Drillium Dude 12-21-10 09:04 PM

Model-building (mostly Formula 1 in 1/12 scale), collecting books, reading, writing and drawing.

I love vintage racing (Formula 1, 2, 3 and Sports Prototypes) from the 60s, 70's and 80s - and early 90s. I don't really keep up with it now, except to appreciate the leaps in technology. No more heroes out there anymore. My book collection, which is mainly vintage racing-related, easily outstrips my bike collection for volume - and weight!

Oh, and I like drilling stuff, too...

My main hobby besides bikes would be collecting die cast cars and building 1/24-1/25 scale plastic car kits, mostly kitbashed hot rods.

Here's a couple samples, I'm not great at it but I think I do okay.

I enjoy writing.

Working on two projects currently, one about all the things surrounding work. How people think of their jobs, my employment history, historical ideas and examples about labor and our conception of it. I think it is fairly timely, and if nothing else it has been therapeutic in a time of limited employment! I also am finishing a compilation of short stories I've written over the last five years. The other thing that has been consuming my time is a fictional story about a company somewhat similar to Schwinn.

I'm also into comedy, and am working on polishing my act. Some say I started working on it like 15 years or so ago. I hope to start performing it around the start of the new year.

Photography is also something I love, however, my 35mm film SLR broke this year and I don't really have scratch to get a digital SLR. Someday.

You remind me of my childhood, making models in the hope that they would appear in Model Car Science Magazine. One did finally, I think I was 9 or 10 at the time. Local bike shop sold Schwinn and had a hobby side, a whole wall of 1/24 and 1/25 scale plastic kits... was too late to enter the Fisher Body model contest...

Why not high drama, the life of Mario Confente? The James Dean of the bicycle framebuilding world.
