Playing guitar, fishing, metal detecting, inventing/making perpetual motion devices which it's patently obvious won't work. Do I need to see a psychiatrist ?

No. You might actually invent a PMM. Who knows? Besides, I think you are probably French. So am I.

I build guitars, and rebuilt an old motorcycle.

 to a fellow luthier.

Isn't just sheer joy and satisfaction stringing up a guitar for the first time? I'm going on my 50th this year :)

I collect old holograms and vintage lasers from the Kennedy years. Here's a pic of the world's oldest commercial and/or operating laser. It's a '62 pulsed ruby laser made by Hughes Aircraft Company less than two years after they made the first laser.

I'm also a telescope builder and avid solar observer using a self designed and built heliostat mount, also pictured below on a cliff in Santa Cruz.

I love this bike. What is it? It would make a killer Cafe Racer!
It's already supposed to be a cafe' racer, can't you tell? 1969 BSA Victor Special.

squirtdad 10-30-09 10:41 AM

other hobbies: Cooking, helping son with home work, building projects with him (home made indo board next), some woodworking (repairing an antique for a neighbor), try to get a little skiing and surfing in. Lot's of house projects. Next big my project, probably a hollow wooden surfboard, I have built a classic foam one. Learning some more about electronics. Lot's of dabbling. Want to get a classic 4x5 view camera and play.

If I invented a PMM machine nobody would believe it, so I'd be in the quandry of either having to give it away -and even then there would be doubters- or sit on it for the rest of my life. Il y a des gens qui aiment pisser dans les violons, j'en fais partie :)

Woodworking, mostly toys and furniture, collecting and restoring antique hand tools and blacksmithing are my non biking hobbies.

I love the 360, and have considered getting one, until I remember how many other toys I've got in the garage that need regular maintenance. I've got your 360's great grandson and his bigger cousin. The local Subie club took a trip to the Indiana factory this summer just as the 2010 models started production.

My three wagons. :)

Robert: If I live another 100 years I bet I'll never meet another collect of vintage lasers. That said, I think it's kinda cool. My only laser experience is the penlight type I tease the cats with. That and shoot it up into the fog at night. That's fun too.

Gotta admit, I scratched my head and thought pretty much the same thing when I read that post from Robert. But hey, if he wants to add another beast to his collection, I've got a 308 nm excimer chlorine gas cell laser with reflective objectives made by Florod stuffed away in the corner of my lab that he could probably score real cheap if he wants it!

Well - when I'm not cycling, working, or spending time with the family, I am fond of hunting hogs. Nothing like taking your rifle for a nice quiet walk in the bush.

Anyone have a wild pig problem? I can help. :)

iab 10-31-09 09:37 AM

I design and make furniture.

RapidRobert 10-31-09 09:41 AM

I appreciate the offer, but my focus is on those made in the Kennedy years. The first one was made by Maiman in May of '60 and by the end of '63 many types were operating and many companies manufacturing them for sale. Here's the first visible continuous wave laser, a helium-neon laser also made in '62 by Perkin Elmer / Spectra-Physics. It's missing its end covers and power supply, but I know someone who has a power supply. There are vacuum tubes inside the central cover. If it takes me 20 years, I'll get it from him! You all know what I mean.

When I was 14 or 15, a woman was going to give me one of those Subarus that she had sitting in her yard. I was always tinkering with stuff, so she figured that it would give me something to do and I might even get it running. Unfortunately, my parents vetoed the idea.

I also collect and use old cameras, mainly 1950s and 60s 35mm. I can fix most of the problems encountered in mechanical cameras, but when they started using electronics, it is hard to get into the small spaces. I have fixed a couple, but they are a pain. I also have several old box cameras. Whenever someone gives me a box of old cameras, there is a Brownie in it.

I have some firearms, but I haven't shot for a few years. I have an Austrailian Enfield that I sporterized, but no cutting was done. I suppose that is like doing a fixed gear conversion. The original sights were loose, so I added a scope mount. Even with the loose open sight, I could hit a milk jug at 200 yards. A milk jug will really explode if you fill it with water first. And you can still recycle them when you are done.

I live in Arizona. The riding season never ends :)

In the winter my hobbies don't change much, read more, watch more movies, golf less and shop for better clothes for winter cycling.

I like this thread, so I'm bringing it back. I seem to collect stray dogs. This is our latest find, Tippy. She was left in a box by the trash to die, the box filled with her own waste. We found her (or, more accurately, Ben the big Shepherd did); she was skin and bones and weighed only three and a half pounds. She's a bit happier now.

Here are our other three. Ben bounced through the rescue circuit and was in at least four different places I know of in his first year before landing with me. He doesn't much like white men, might have been the problem (he likes me, but I'm Black Irish). Willy, the Beagle, was very badly abused for a long time. We found him under a bush in a local park, starving and feral. It took him months to trust us, but he is now very loving. One of the reasons we kept Tippy is that Willy plays with her; he rarely plays with other dogs. Maizy was found by my GF before we met, wandering in the alley, starving (which seems to be given with our dogs when we find them).

I also have a lot of record albums in my studio where I work. I'm not sure how many, or even if they're particularly valuable, since I rarely pay more than a dollar for one.

I doodle absentmindedly. During my college years I developed this obsession with lines. More specifically thickening lines at key points to add to their effect. This then progressed into something just completely over-exaggerated like this.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5287627_n.jpg

Most of the time I have no clue what I'm drawing; it starts as a group of lines and eventually becomes something. A lot of people seem to read 'tribal tattoo' in what I do. I try to avoid that connection at all costs, but it seems to be one that cannot be avoided.

flammenwurfer 12-21-10 10:12 AM

Cute dogs! I don't think I could not have a dog. I love mine and he's helping me get through some tough times which makes him mean even more to me. Pretty amazing for not being able to talk.
I'm not sure the other dogs at the park appreciated this...

I know what you mean. However, having visited New Zealand, I came to really dig the Maori facial tattoos. It was pretty awesome to see guys in three piece suits on the sidewalk with those tattoos.

buldogge 12-21-10 10:48 AM

FWIW...If it makes you feel better...that design is completely "un-tattoo-able" given the spacing (lack thereof). ;)

I no longer tattoo...but...I do spend my days babysitting tattoo artists.

I also like long walks on the beach, traveling (not much anymore), good food, and machining/fabrication/building...cars both vintage (Inno Mini Cooper 1300, '62 Buick Skylark) and modern (BMW MCoupe and 325is SCCA ITS race car), vintage Italian scooters (Vespa and Lambretta), and motorcycles both 2T (NSR250, CR 125) and 4T (Honda VFR800i).

These days, most of my time is spent on the bikes (easily done in the basement) when I'm not chasing my (almost) 5yo around!

I collect books, model trains, cameras, yo yo's, printed ephemera - basically anything that will gather dust on my shelves, I suppose. I'm also a fine art photographer. Most of the "nice" months of the year are when I exhibit, so crummy weather tends to be when I get caught up with my backlog of exhibition prints, along with matting and framing commission prints.

pinch1967 12-21-10 11:06 AM

I collect Militaria , taking apart and rebuilding rifles and handguns and then going to the range to shoot is a another hobby of mine !
