which reminds me, has collecting vintage Skis been discovered as a hobby yet? I'd like to try a pair of them nice Olin Mark VI, the ones James Bond used..

Craven: I was born down here in Key West but have a relative in Truro Mass. In 1976 I visited this relative and was told the gang was going up to Mt. Washington to do the spring ski thing. I wasn't interested. Then they told me young girls skied in their bikinis. This I had to see. It was TRUE. It was TRUE. I've never forgotten the sight of bikini-clad skiers or how steep the headwall is. Walked up to the base and figured it to be at least 50-55 degrees (angle). There were hand and foot holds cut in the ice to help ski nuts get to the top. I was very impressed.

Sounds like my kind of hiking trip. I forgot to mention that I also enjoy backpacking/camping. All the serious (weight weenie) backpackers sit around eating dehydrated food and purifying water while my friends and I eat steak and drink wine. Later we bust out the tequila. We usually hike too far to bring beer and keep it cold, but we managed a cooler with dry ice once. Here is a picture of our most recent trip to North Manitou Island in Lake Michigan.

I lived in upstate NY through the summer of '96 and vividly remember those long cold days wrenching in the garage. There's nothing like rolling around on cold concrete!!!

I don't downhill, but I do as much XC skiing as the weather here allows and when I head up North to visit relatives.
Thought about getting into vintage ski equipment and actually found a few sites online that cater to it.
Then I realized I don't need another obscure, headache inducing, -where the hell am I gonna find one of those- hobbies. No matter how much I enjoy it.
I also don't think my wife would appreciate more "clutter".

Here on Ohio's North Coast, winter will be a couple of months off, but fall wind, rain, dark, and the time change make it seem like winter.

Almost all of my hobbies/activiities/interests are outdoor in nice weather or in my garage. Winter is pretty much my dormant season. I read a lot, watch movies or Wii. I do get out and hike in the metroparks. I love going out after a new snow. I have cross country skis, but we don't seem to get enough snow to use on the park trails any more, and I have no interest in going to a ski resort to follow the leader. My garage gets below freezing, so I'm not out there much in the winter, either. I tried heating my wood shop once, but the condensation from heating/cooling rusts all my tools.

In nice weather I have too many interests! I need to retire. In addition to the bikes, I have a 1958 MGA roadster and four scooters. I ride the scooters to work almost every day from the first spring rains (to wash the salt off of the roads) until the first good snow, usually early December (and the salt gets dumped again.) Here's a link to the toys in the garage.



Stuffed over on the left side of the garage is my wood shop. I don't get to use it much since I started with the MG and scoots. I'm also an amateur photographer, which goes well with most of my other hobbies. Here are the cameras, and here's the smugmug gallery. I also have a Subaru WRX that I occasionally autocross (timed races around a course of cones)

Like several of you, I've got a few of these sort of toys. These will do for starters.














I used to backpack a bunch, but now only hike in the parks. We are lucky to have two different counties wonderful metroparks here, as well as the Cuyahoga National Park which follows along the canal towpath and has trails through the surrounding hills. Lots of beautiful area for what's otherwise a pretty flat area. We also do a big garden every year, but that's more my wife's bailiwick. I just tote things and dig holes.

That's about it. I used to sail and fish a lot, but haven't for several years. The boat has been in the backyard for so long the trailer tires are about sunk into the ground.

Ah, a High Standard fan! Shot a Military Citation for years, used a K-1200 in three-gun matches, and used to own a Sears 54, which was a FN sporting Mauser action stocked and barreled at High Standard.

I play with model trains when I have time,(read, not often) the NKP, and the modern W&LE in h o.

Otherwise, I play with old stuff. And I'm a terrible packrat.
Done some preservation work on historic buildings, mostly a couple railroad stations.
Old farm equipment, thankfully we have room to store it.
Woodworking, all old tools from flea markets.
Photography, have about 50 old cameras and one DSLR. Mostly Argus TLR's, Pentax K1000's and Zenit EM's. Going to buy a Spotmatic one of these days.

I love guns, but I lack the $$ and time, plus...I'm a rotten shot. But I have a sporterized M1917 Enfield in 30.06 made at Baldwin locomotive's Eddystrone plant, and a couple old '22's

cars: '49 DeSoto, '66 & '70 Datsun 1600s, '72 240Z. Last one gone 20+ years ago, after getting married.
anyone want an '85 Maserati Biturbo? Too many special tools I don't have.
bike: just one, a '69 BSA 650 chopped. Gone 23 years ago.
audio: stopped short of the reel to reel, but comtemplated. Now I just have lots of multi-colored vinyl left.
guns: never, and if there was a gun in my house my wife would have shot me long ago
Redoing the 1927 house we bought right after marriage.

I did spend many years either coaching or driving my daughter all around the South to play soccer, basketball and volleyball. She gave it all up before I might have made some back with scholarships.

Now it's just rebuilding bikes.

The bull HD was Dad's that he bought new in the late '40s for $50. I shot many a rat with that as a kid on the farm. The other was one I bought much later so I'd have one like his. It wasn't $50. (He bought an Omega watch at the same time for $50 that I also have. Wife got me one many years ago, and it wasn't $50, either!!) Neither was the 107 that I bought just before prices stated getting stupid in the late '90s. I wish I'd bought a few of the space guns that were going for $6-700. I did have a 101 Olympic that I sold to buy the above SAKO Vixen. I was in the HS Collectors Association back when they had their first national meeting here in Cleveland at the Ohio Gun Collectors meeting. That was pretty interesting!

That bottom Garand is a beauteous thing!

wes; we've got an M1917 as well, but a Remington. My brother has it.

And all our old farm stuff ended up in my brother's barn when we sold the farmhouse and barns. He's got the hay hook hanging from the roof, even though it isn't functional.

Oh, and I forgot. even though I don't do anything with them anymore, I have three letterset printing presses and a couple dozen drawers of type. I used to print flyers and business cards as a kid. They're linked on the above camera collection page, along with my last old typewriter from my pile.
