I have an old single shot Marlin Model 100 that I absolutely love. It's a cheap gun, but it's a machine. I keep hoping to find another one that i can modify with peep and globe sights. It gets kind of difficult shooting much past 100 yards with the standard open sights that came on it.
Yeah, I would not be looking to spend a lot (and I would not be looking for a show quality piece...I want something that was built to be used--and has been). The training rifles sound interesting considering I don't really care too much about the ballistics part (I always hated getting into discussions of stopping power with my old room mate...I am not going to be "stopping" anything) and .22 lrs should be easy to come by the few times I would want to shoot.
My grandpa has/had an old rifle from WWII...He was a signal operator (or something else on a radio boat...I don't really know) in the south pacific and AFAIK never saw action. I don't think the gun is capable of firing (although it may have just been a part that was removed to make it that way)...I have only seen it once when I was younger as my family aren't really pro gun people and it was kept more as a souvenier but I think it might have been a japanese weapon.

I suppose that is another hobby I have wanted to try...I just like anything DIY and I like beer...

After spending this summer in europe, I have had a hankering to get my motorcycle license and maybe at some point restore somethign vintage. It sort of grew out of a james bond complex...I realized that there is a very common vehicle (more so on the streets of europe) that I am completely incapable of operating. I can sort of ride a horse (it had better be a nice one)...I can drive a manual transmission...and I have been in full-cockpit style flight simulators (not that I would really trust myself to land...) but I couldn't hop on a motorcycle and ride away.

Unfortunately, working on a dissertation in the humanities is probably closer to a hobby than it is to a career track these days.

OK!!!

Almost bought one a few years ago for $2,500. It took me a little over 2 hours to get back with the money and it had sold.

I have a friend that's a Ferrari mechanic, he probably has all the tools for it.

Oh yes I just remembered I've recently taken up sailing too. Got a 14' Laser, fun boat. But not exactally a winter time thing unless I shell out about 1K for a nice dry suit.
Shoot it and clean it after. Every time. Don't drop in on concrete. Enfield's should be shot. They are not Holland & Holland double guns made for royalty. They are better than that.

It looks like 22LR rimfire to me. Look at ammo box on table top. Now, about that tape,...

I didn't know there were so many of you on here that like those icky gunz! Don't you know, gunz are evil.

My main other hobby is working on https://velobase.com, improving the site and the data for all you C&V nuts.

In the past I've done a fair bit of writing, have a half a dozen manuscripts around on the PC that I never really got around to getting polished enough to peruse publishing.

I make it to the gun range from time to time. Guess most of my collection would classify as C&V, though not quite Curio/Relic status yet. My sister has the old Colt .22 target pistol (same frame as the .38 Colt Detective, chambered in .22), the Remington .22 single shot rifle is probably from the 40's or earlier as well. I've got a Remington Nylon 66 semi-auto .22 and dad has the Browning .22 semi-auto to round out the rimfire collection of the family. As for big-bore stuff, a 7mm Mag Browning BAR and a couple of Winchester 12 gauges (1200 pump & Super X Model 1 semi-auto) are also in the collection.

we can pretty much ride throughout the winter here in dallas, but i've noticed a similarity here on this forum with another forum i belong to, which is Audiokarma.org. there is a large vintage audio contingent there, although that is not all of what we're into, but this C & V bike forum might as well be a classic audio forum over there, the personalities are all the same, it seems, only difference being what is collected.

i'm all about vintage steel, although i'm a returnee to cycling after many years away. i just got a great deal on an early 80s Dawes Handbuilt on the auction site, and will post pix when it gets here. my other ride for the now is a Vista Carrerra7 single speed conversion and a Trek 930 SingleTrack.

Lots of shooters here! I used to shoot for 4H in Hagerstown, MD, and then a junior olympic shooting team here in NY. I haven't shot in about 8 years or so, but I miss it sometimes.

If anyone is interested in a Diana Model 72 JR air rifle (.177 cal), shoot (pun intended) me a PM. It needs seals I think, whatever that means.

In the winter I downhill ski, XC, snowshoe, and I started riding a 80's Burton Air with alpine bindings last winter. I also usually have at least one bike project, and this winter it's a '49 Columbia.

That's a cool Subie!

I'm into vintage cars and motorcycles too ('67 Mercedes-Benz 250 SE, '73 BMW CSL, '76 Triumph Spitfire, '79 Ferrari 308 GTS project, '83 Porsche 911 SC, '71 Norton Commando, '83 Kawasaki GPz). I collect other things (wine, cast-iron dog doorstops, utter buddies, hotel door tags). I also do quite a bit of outdoor activities (ski, board, hike, sail, surf, kayak, and camp to name a few) as well as indoor things like cooking and beer pong.

Hard to top building and riding bikes as a hobby though. I have a couple of fall projects that have me excited. I'm sure I will post as they come together.

I feel your pain, dude. Or felt it, until I finished the !##$@ thing and sort of got a job.

Then, once you get used to the idea of adjuncting, the lack of tenure pressure does leave some time for hobbies.

So for me, when I'm not riding bikes, or working on bikes, I'm often politicking for bikes. Local government is a great diversion for those with too much time on their hands.

Here in the South, winter is a good time for canoeing and hiking (no bugs!); when I lived up north, I was into cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Get some backcountry XC skis with metal edges and you can ski anywhere, pretty much.

Until recently, I had a 1974 Saab 99 that took a lot of my time and money. I loved it, but I have to say that bikes are a lot more forgiving. That Subaru rules, though.

And then there are all the other hobbies that involve hunting for old stuff in thrift shops and antique stores. Records, mostly. Nothing quite so addictive as finding a record you can sell for $20 on eBay, which finances the purchase of 39 more 50¢ records.

Before the kids, my main 'hobby' was the complete restoration of an 1889 farm house that we bought as a "Handy-mans Special" in 1981. Imagine a two story home with a 'gravity furnace' and a 3' x 3' grate in the center of the first floor as the only source of warmth in Dutchess County, NY.

We became avid flea market buyers, furnishing the house with mostly turn of the century oak, including a number of Larkin pieces. The Sellers 48" hoosier cabinet that I lovingly restored became the centerpiece of our kitchen. I helped my wife with her Depression Glass, early Noritake and antique sewing machine collection, while she scouted out Victrolas, Victors & Edison cylinder machines for me to rebuild.

We once made a bid on a 1946 Ford, but lost out. I have the tools and knowledge, but probably not the time to do a serious restoration.

For the past 13 years, our adopted girls have been our main hobby. We sold the farmhouse and built a new place in a secluded nook of woods in 1999 so that we could spend more time raising a family. I still do auto repair and play with machinery, but mostly garden these days when not being dad, or repairing and riding old bicycles. I sometimes take the kids up to the school yard to play, and always take a kite. Some people fish. I fly kites. Nothing elaborate like Dirtdrop, just simple single string.

Still in boxes and not touched for 30 years is an extensive H.O. model railroad collection. I also once dabbled with model aircraft and occasionally hang out at the local RC club, but have not taken the plunge.

Hey Mos, love the old Subie!

Thanks. Yes old cars can be quite expensive, and I've simply passed through all the other ones I thought I could fix, but the Subaru has been with me for years now. I recently just took it on a 2000 mile trip from Colorado to Georgia, and wrote an article about it that will be appearing in Japanese Nostalgic Car magazine.

It's a very small car, in fact a few inches shorter than the much more well known British Mini - with a two cylinder 25hp engine and a 69mph top speed. Driving on the Interstates was a bit hairy because there isn't a single living soul in the U.S. who knows how to drive under the speed limit. Even when running through sections limited to 55mph I still had people flashing their lights and honking at me.
And of course I had a few mechanical issues along the way, like a cracked exhaust that had to be welded up, and distributor advance freezing limiting the stop speed to 50mph.

This is a wonderful car. Good photos too.
I once purchased a 1968 Mini in Vancouver and drove it all the way home to Key West in 1977. Car had 160,000 miles on it when I picked it up. I kept it for 5 years and put another 40 grand on it. The repairs started to slow me down because of parts problems and my own limited knowledge. Eventually sold it to a man in Massachusetts who specialized in British cars, especially Damler's (I think I have that right). He saw my car while vacationing in Key West. As of 2 years ago the car was still being used on the road somewhere up in Mass. That was the last post card he sent me. I miss my 12" wheeled Mini.

Also have owned a 77 Midget and a 1969 Sprite. Love little weird cars.

My area could best be described as 'Subaru rich', and I finally stepped up to the plate and bought an Outback around 8 years ago. I've become a big fan of their quirky engineering. Some years back I was in Japan on business and made a side trip to Subaru HQ in Shinjuku (Tokyo) to pay homage.

Nice Bike david. Is that a Triumph? then i'm going to guess it's a tiger.

I'd kill for a bonneville, but college debt and the salary of an architect don't allow for that.

Me too!

Just H O Gauge(and the occasional OO that being mis-represented as H O Gauge). But I also like old SLR Nikon Cameras, Vintage Vespas and Clarinet and Saxophones. I won't even go into my interst in oenophilia and "sippies"/ rare Liquors.....

The bore is bright, but the rifling has seen better days. Probably still shoots better than I can. Family legend says my uncle shot a dove in flight with it many many years ago. I can only imagine how many rounds it has shot. I think I pushed at least 60 down the barrel my last trip to the range.
