In almost any arena of collectabiles original is king and command top prices and restored is only worth more than a rust bucket. Now I have no knowlegde of the venerable Typhoon, and I see lots of overpriced bikes on CL and Ebay, but $900 !?!?!?

The nice thing about a restored Schwinn is that the decals tend to be straighter than the origionals.

Now, if that had Paramount decals and was claimed to be restored by Waterford, lots of people around here would think that it was a bargain

Gorgeous, and possibly worth it to someone. Not me though.

+1. It is a beauty. They did a good job. If they do get it, good for them. But it's not my cup o' tea. Heck I'm thinking about getting a beat up old cantilever frame to rat for s***'s and giggles.

In the car collector field there is a subset of people known by me as the concourse people. These people will lay down terrycloth toweles as they carefully and slowly wheel their concourse level cars off the trailers and over the grass to their assigned spot in the event so as not to get so much as a single particle of a blade of grass stuck to the tire treads. I can't do that and tend to just let the grass fly all over the place if I'm unloading a car. Been a long time since I've played with cars, and I've never gone to a concourse level event.

That's a nice looking bike, I have no idea if it is concourse quality, but I suspect the current owner of it believes it is. And that belief is worth half the price if not more. If the seller believes then so might a buyer. They hate me at auctions.

Yeah, I hear you... esp. being an owner of a car that could have been 'concourse level' (one of the first 10 of its kind made and the only one of those documentedly rolling around today.) I still drive it when there is no salt on the road (but I baby it like hey...) and/but I still let my kids eat ice cream cones in the back seat. 'Cause that's what matters to me. An object is an object. And, yes, one can make some serious deneiros out of an object. But the satisfaction of using a somewhat desirable thing/object every day is very hard to beat, but it should not restrict one's priorities. Yeah, I am a member of a (particular) car club and, yeah, I have been (consciously) driving the same car make for 20 years and, yeah, I am kinda disheartened by the fact that my car maker has become a 'status' symbol. Very translatable to bikes...

You hit the nail on the head-- even in pristine shape it's too new to be worth anywhere near that.

For that amount of money we're talking a full scale ballooner, and probably a prewar one at that (with a few notable exceptions like Phantoms).

That ad may be better stated as:

"Schwinn Typhoon - Repainted, rechromed, redone, reworked, and generally overdone considering it isn't the rarest nor scarcest thing in the world." Better yet, since this is a '74, the seller should simply state: "I am an idiot."

Heck, most of that brightwork is now obviously rechromed - it never would have looked that decent when new, not even on a '50s model. Someone pi$$ed away a lot of money on this thing for naught.
