Salvaging & Preserving Foil Headtube Badges

I’ve helped my mother out law* to find her first road bike via craigslist in her hometown. She arrived in my hometown with her new bike last night**. It’s a ’74 Peugeot UO-8 that seems to have about fifty original miles on it. Nearly mint. It does have a few scuffs from garage life, including the foil badge on the headtube. I’m thinking that clear nail polish is the best bet. Anybody have any better recommendations?

* We’re not married, so she’s not my mother in law.
** Pics will show up in the appropriate thread later this weekend.
