Bikes: 1972 Columbia Tourist Expert III, Columbia Roadster

Get a picture of that Simplex derailleur. That might help narrow it down.

It could be any year in the '70s, prior to '79. Grand Touring is labled on the bike I can see. I've not seen this model with anything other than Stronglight Cranks. The 1020 tubing is entry level, combined with the tubing and other parts and shape, it's not a very good bike so it really doesn't matter. Whether this particular bike preceeds the better Gr. Tours or the crank's been changed or re-labled, don't know. Hey, you yanked-it outa the garbage, it is what it is, what more can I say. It's not like it's an airloom or a costly aquisition.

+1 The ugly seat stay caps and the non chromed fork ends say 72 or earlier. But the head badge and the font on the down tube make me think is a 73. Can you post a picture of the head badge?

The first year for the round headbadge was 1973. Check the rear derailleur cage for a date code.

^ What's the breakdown of the date code on these? mmddyy, dddy, alphanumeric, etc? I have a MB mixte with 1020 tube set and the same crank and headbadge and no model name. Never got around to hunting down any info on it.

Now that I see that it has a cottered crank, I suppose that it's pre-'74, maybe pre-'73.
Late '73s and all '74s had cotterLESS. It has potential just the same, Motos are cool.

Simplex Derailleurs usually have a year stamped onto the pulley cage.
