vintage allez question
i know i know. who cares about an older specialized allez-they're common right? well this one i just picked up-never saw one like it. ive owned the "american flyers" all red one and you see it alot. This one is red with white accents and has white cloud like designes in the red finish. it is made of tange prestige tubes and has the prestige black and gold decal on it. all suntour superbe pro parts except for super record seat tube and head set. index superbe pro index shifting. has o.m.a.s small round decals on the top tube as well which makes me think it could have been a pro road bike. this one has me wondering. any help much appreciated. joe

I had a guy offer to sell me one in the parking lot of my LBS the other day, it was red and had a lugged frame. He wanted $400. I'm not sure if that's a good price or not but quite frankly if I had the money I would have bought it.

I know this isn't the same vintage you speak of, but I just thought I'd post a steel Allez. It's a 93 Pro. I'm pondering getting rid of it (to thin the herd and make room for a CX bike) but I don't know if I can bear it!

Can't wait to see pics of yours Joe.

Never saw that paint, though I've seen diffferent shades of red ranging from a ruby to racing red. Some '86s, SEs had Suntour Superbe or Sprint but yours is indexed meening it could be an '87. It might've been made by Miyata. Any Prestige bike is excellant.
SE wasn't on all the bikes. Yours being a "special" one as you should suspect makes sense. This is deduction on my part as information at large is rife with conflicting takes and guesses. Most owners are second or third owners, most dates are xx or yy, ranges of years. A few brocures are out there from what I read, few if any cats. Your bike is worth alot. There's one in e-bay for thou., a mix of parts, yours if in fine shape is way better. Like the man said "they're not popping up like they used to... nice bikes"

This might require going to the source. Does anybody know if Jim Merz can be contacted, either through CR, or I'd heard he is still doing consulting work for Specialized. Probably sick of getting questions like this though.

I was going to suggest contacting Specialized as well. I'm in the process of restoring an '83 Stumpy that I bought new. Although they have no "classiche" division, they've been great at assisting with paint, decals and even sourcing an original fork (they didn't hold up too well and were often replaced with a Ross fork, as mine was). Many of their staffers have been there for a long time and are an excellent resource.

I would be very suspicious of that decal. Doesn't look like there is any clear coat over it. Very easy for someone to slap it onto the bike just for the heck of it.
