Then i was in a great bike shop, a vintage friendly place that carries pashley and some velo orange stuff, Giles Berthoud, etc. along with plenty of new Bianchi. They had a completely original vintage army bike on the rack, complete with a leather gun holster strapped to the seat tube, under the seat stays. It had a rod brake in front, with a pad that comes down on the tire, original racks etc.
I live behind the Detroit Institute of Art and there's an employee that rides a Raleigh Sprite to work. It's in rough shape, but the kind of rough that tells a story. The brooks has sure seen better days. I always mean to take a photo but I never do. |
I drove into Chicago today to deliver a Centurion Accordo and the streets are just crawling with vintage bikes. Many of them are SS conversions. I saw a woman riding a Linus today......never heard of it, but very cool looking commuter. I was kind of worried about getting into an accident from rubbernecking all the bikes.

There's a lady not far from here with a rusty green Raleigh Sport (23"frame) in her garden. I tried to talk her out of it the other day. No luck.
I've got a rusty green Raleigh Sport frame (21") in the basement. One of these nights I'm gonna steal it and swap out the frames and put it back before the sun comes up. |
I've been really seeing some gems lately...a Ciocc road by me today, I got passed by a Colnago on my after work cruise and I found this absolute beauty yesterday...
http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/a.../Photo0645.jpg http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/a.../Photo0646.jpg It looked better than it's photo'ing...it also had an odd combo; low riders with a constructeur rack. Beautifully appointed bike...I wish it were mine! |

OH DEAR LORD...I didn't even make that connection! No...that wasn't me! |
I've seen this Riggio with epic gymnast bars several times:

This evening driving home from the grocery store I saw a distinguished gentleman riding a Nishiki touring bike with some bags fitted. I was bummed because I usually try to ride to the store which would have given me a chance to chat him up. Not many folks use a bicycle for transportation around here.

I rode my UO8 to the Registry Of Motor Vehicles this morning, locked it to a bike rack. Came out 10 minutes later and there was a slightly ratty Centurion locked to the other end of the rack. No I didn't get any pics, didn't take the camera, had no reason to expect to want it.

Sekine that I saw in the wilds of East Grand Rapids (AKA East Great Falls to you fans of American Pie).

Every single day I work I literally am stumbling over dozens of them. Honestly, I'm a little burned out on old Schwinntinentals and Rampars right now.
But I also got to work on a Colnago Mexico today. And I started putting parts on my Raleigh Pro, so that was a little pick-me-up. |
This 'Hobbs of Barbican' was on the Lake Pepin 3 Speed Tour last weekend.

Just the other morning I saw a local middle school girl riding a centurion ironman expert too big for her, probably her dad's from way back, I wanted to stop and make an offer as I've wanted one for a while now, but didn't want to be a creepy 41 year old stopping to talk to a school age girl.

I am glad this thread popped up. I have thought several times about doing something similar the last year or so but never did. there is a nice Myata tourer that hangs out at the coffee shop, I'll have to snapp a pic or two.

A guy that works in the shop opposite to the place I work commutes on a Colnago in the well known blue/white/orange colour scheme. With crudely fitted fenders and converted to non-serie shimano flatbars operating the original Athena gear. He damages the paint with a chainlock. And it's my size. blast and damnation.

A couple of Apollos from a trip to Vancouver last summer. I had never seen one in California. In Vancouver seems you can't throw a rock without hitting one. Cool looking bikes.

Raleighs from Vancouver with one sexy retro Italian (I think). Vancouver is a great vintage bike city.

Nearly forgot these two from the ATOC:

This is a 1973 Schwinn World Traveler, I think. It has the "World" headbadge instead of the Schwinn oval. In one of life's little coincidences, Auchencrow had just told me about his '73 World Traveler and why it was historically significant, and I'd said I had never seen one before. A few days later, on my daily lunchtime walk to the bike shop on the Detroit Riverfront, I encountered this bike ridden by its owner to the shop. She told me it was "given" to her a few years ago -- that is, sold to her at a very low price -- and her friends have been telling her to get rid of it and buy new. I told her it was a good bike, and to sell it only to me. So she may have second thoughts about unloading it now.
The bike in the background was built by the owner, who works at the shop and another one, and is also a bike courier for a law firm. http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/c...ageur/swt1.jpg http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/c...ageur/swt2.jpg |
A nice Simplex city bike found in Heidelberg, Germany.
