I'm thinking of doing a photo journal of the bikes locked up on the streets of Manhattan. The quantity and variety is astounding. C&V enthusiasts would be impressed.

Spotted this DX3000 today at a Goodwill:

I saw a giant Appel while riding the Chelan Century yesterday! Had a nice conversion with the owner - you could tell he really loved that bike.

Looks ike the man riding it was also a giant! Wow. I don't think I've ever seen such a large bike! Even bigger than the 67cm Fuji in my mate's garage perhaps?

Pompiere 06-26-11 03:36 PM

This morning on the MS150 ride, I saw a early 70's Schwinn Continental with Pletcher rack, chrome fenders, and triathalon bars! I saw a lot of tri bars on hybrids and comfort bikes this year, mounted on top of the flat bars.

Got a fully-chromed Raleigh Sports into the shop over the weekend. Boy howdy, is that thing nice! And, AND, we also got in a YOOooooge old Gazelle city bike, and that thing is seriously loaded. Full fenders, of course, with clear plastic skirt guards and a full chaincase. 3-speed hub with an internally-routed twist shifter (didn't get much of a chance to suss that out) and rod brakes to the dual drums. Interstingly, squeezing either lever actuates both brakes. I'm strongly considering buying it, but jeepers: I think I have more than enough bikes!

Will post pics when I have a chance.

I thought I'd posted a pic of this bike in this thread a year ago, but I guess not.

Last July I saw this quite nice Raleigh Sprite locked up at a local Meijer (think Wal*Mart Superstore).

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8...0714101219.jpg

Now here is the weird part.

Almost 1 year to the day later, here is the same bike locked up in front of the Wal*Mart. These stores are less than 1/2 mile away from each other.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-h...20Sprite.3.jpg

Only now the tires have gone flat and the chrome is all covered with surface rust. It obviously hasn't moved in months. It even has spider webs on it.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-M...2520Sprite.jpg

I asked the Wal*Mart store manager if I could rescue it but was told that they must report it to the police. Then it goes to auction or is scrapped.

My wife, bless her soul, said that it was a shame I couldn't get that bike because she knew I could make it nice again.

Spotted these beauties:

This Battaglin must have been sensational before its city bike transformation

I know the owner of this Raleigh - she's a server at our weekend brunch spot. I saw this parked out there for a few years wondering who owned the beauty, and then saw her ride by on it one day.

This isn't a bike, but it definitely caught my fancy:

Maybe if you ask nice, it will give your fancy back to you.

I remember seeing that frame in Appel's shop when it was being built!

If I had his physique, I'd be pretty happy that I had a bike that fit me, too.

This thread really makes me miss Philadelphia. Although if I locked any bike up in Philadelphia, I'd assume it would be stolen immediately. I can't believe what people will leave locked up there.

Finding vintage bikes in the wild in Boston is sort of like finding rats in the trash. They are everywhere. And the Fuji in the picture isn't particularly interesting, but it seems to be a victim of a neighborhood complaint. Check out the notice. Bikes were still there 4 days after I took the picture. This is from the Myrtle St playground that I have featured before.

No pics, but yesterday on the train home a youngish guy got on with a nice blue w/white Shogun. I asked him about its age and he said 80's, "refurbished" a few years ago. Fully geared, not a fixie, with aero brake levers, side-pull brakes, quill pedals but w/o clips.

Then this morning a guy got off the train same place I did (end of the line in Attleboro) with a yellow UO8 about the same vintage as mine (early 70's). I commented on it, he said thanks. But his was a SS, could't tell if it was fixie too. As I rode away I was thinkin', how's about you try to follow me up the west bank of the Blackstone River, up Old River Road, then past Lincoln Mall on rt116?

Maybe he'd have blown me away.;)

Addition: A guy at the station today (Wed) had a Peugeot Chamonix, said he'd bought in Germany. It had nice sidepulls, didn't see any label. The DR's and crank were labeled "Sport x<mumble-scratched>" or something. And it had Biopace chainrings. And the seatpost was way over-extended and actually bent a little, may even have put a warp in the ST.

No pics, but I got out on the Gran Sport for a 34mile ride today. I stopped in Concord (MA) Center and fell into a conversation with a guy riding another obviously vintage steel-frame bike. He said it was a '72 Cilo, a Swiss company. (He pronounced it CHEE-low.) He said some of the components were original, particularly the Campy crank. I'm pretty sure the Shimano 105 derailleurs weren't original though...

KonAaron Snake 07-15-11 04:36 PM

This barely counts since it's parked by a bike shop employee by her shop and I see it all of the time, but I felt it was worth posting photos of...

Particularly unusual - Campy BMX cranks!
