This Trek caught my attention outside the grocery store a few weeks back. I had purchased a snack, and was enjoying eating it while admiring the overall simplicity, and understatement that the single speed build seemed to be expressing. Then a gorgeous young lady approached, set a small bag of groceries in the basket, unlocked from the rack, and mounted the saddle. As she began to ride off, she looked back, smiled, and said “Have a nice snack!”

I can pretty much count on the Motobecane being locked up in front of the bank every time!

Also, driving up to Mt. Constitution, we passed a guy riding a vintage steel bike up to the summit. When he made the summit, I spoke with him for a few minutes. He was riding an approx. '71 Mercier 300 with a 42t small chainring and 28t large rear cog. Mt. Constitution is a 2000' climb in 4 miles and the rider was probably in his mid-late 60's. To say I was impressed would be an understatement!

I saw this bike this morning. I can't remember ever seeing a tandem locked up outside.

Dropped my son off at college today(distance runner) and was happy to see the 84 world sport I brought in the rack next to his teammates lotus.

Hey! I just noticed this thread. I had a few other threads started with this "Spotted in the wild" theme in mind. If I knew, I would've posted here instead. Will do from now on.

Very little C&V interest / market here. Most locals don't see the value in an old bike their parents would have ridden. Their bikes can't be black enough and carbon enough and expensive enough. Either that or tires fat enough to make up for whatever other shortcoming. That said, you can't turn around downtown without seeing an "old" bike on a nearby rack. Sometimes just a clunker being ridden into the ground. Occasionally a true C&V that the owner obviously enjoys owning/riding. More often, just a reasonably maintained bike that someone's holding onto, just because it's cheaper than buying new.

All these were spotted within aprx. 1 minute, 1/2 block.

Love that view, currently its obscured by the smoke we are getting from wildfires across the border, hope they and we get some relief soon air quality in Seattle is abysmal right now , looks like pictures of the Pittsburgh from the early 70s with factory smoke

Other than the color and saddle, it looks a lot like my old 1975 Fuji Special Sports Tourer. I don't recognize that color though. The shifting looks like SunTour and the cranks Sugino(?). Saddle doesn't look original for the frame to me.
I think Simplex derailleurs were standard on low end Peugeot in the mid-70s.

The head of the binder bolt on the Nitto I-beam stem will have the Fuji name.

Bottom bracket may exhibit notched shell edges to take toothed safety washers affixed to the BB cups. Quirky arrangement employed for a short time on some Nippon produce.

Cycle looks like an S10-S ca. 1974-75.

The family and I recently returned from a European vacation. Here are a few photos of what I spotted in the wild:

Just a guess but it reminds me of a Nishiki Professional I saw on craigslist a few weeks back. It was a beauty but darker green, possibly metallic paint, and the fork was different. Could be a different year? From what I read on the interwebs it was during the years that Katakura (Silk?) made the bikes for Nishiki. It was a bit far from me and I wasn't sure it would take fenders so I didn't ask about it. I drooled over the pics a bit but that's it.

I took your guess and searched the web. You’re dead on!

I ride past this bike often, but only got close enough, long enough to snap the one photo, and failed to really checkout the headbadge which would have at least indicated the maker.

I’d never come across or otherwise noticed this specific model before. Looking at the early 70’s catalogue specs now AND... what a lusty bike!
