It's genuine, Kurt, but I'm not sure when it was made; my guess is that it's from the late seventies/early eighties since it's the same jersey Eric Heiden is wearing on the cover of the '81 catalog. I bought it on eBay advertised as "lightly used, no rips, stains, or fraying." It was as advertised.

There are some wool jerseys from the forties/fifties that have the "Schwinn" in script (black "Schwinn" on white panel, red jersey), and I've been looking for one of those forever.

With the amount of money you've been spending recently on wheels and saddles, perhaps you'll want the bank account too ;)

With the amount of money you've been spending recently...
So far it has all been "cash and carry." Nothing on credit!

cuda-- i wasn't an attacker in the whatever fashion you mentioned, i just needed some credible info so i could make a move on it...the whole 'i'm selling this from my late father's estate' thing just rang a wrong bell for me, but the gear looked so enticing, and if i recall at such a good price it was worth looking into. i ride a minimum of 62 cm, and i'm guessing that frame is about a 60cm, but it looked close enough i wanted the guy to give me some numbers.

You'll probably feel better when I tell you this: It's a 61cm.

The story given in the auction is factual, and had a few additional twists and turns as well. I won't mention them here, for I would not consider it appropriate.

Thanks for reminding me to sell off the ugly Triomphe calipers off my Basso (recently swapped them for a nicer set - thanks Bob!).

BUMP!!

Very nice Kurt! I know the bars had to be swapped, is the rest original? It looks like the previous owner took better care of the 72 than the 70's old owner. I know the lugs, fork rake and brakes are different between the two, anything else notable?

So far, the bits that required replacement are:

The Mavic Monthlery tubulars (for Rigida AL-1360s),
The handlebar (damaged Giro for CdM),
Regina BX freewheel (swapped for Suntour Perfect)
Chain (original is long gone),
BB spindle and bolts (lost at the shop who took the BB apart),
Hoods (NOS shields bought by the previous owner),
Cables/cable housing (obviously)
Brake pads (Original Campagnolo pads swapped or Scott-Mathauser Model C's)
Front derailer (It had a second-gen Record on it with a cable stop)
Top tube clips (Originals were rusty - Will had already purchased an NOS replacement set).
Cinelli 1A 7mm quill binder bolt (rusty)

I purchased the '72 from the original owner's son - he had owned it for a couple of years. It hadn't been abused, though it was noticably neglected. On the other hand, I have no idea how many hands the '70 has passed through, ever since it was sold new at Magnano Cycle. The list of what did not require replacement is shorter then the list of what had to be swapped, replaced, or chucked out. What remains is the frameset, headset, RD and crankset; in addition the original BB cups are shot, but still installed - I have a set waiting to replace the originals, when I get a chance.

Differences between the framesets include:

27" vs. 700C rims ('70 and '72, respectively),
Chainstays ('70 longer then '72),
Fork rake,
Fork length (again, another 27" vs. 700C difference)
Eyelets (not on '72, but on '70).
Braze-on top tube mounts on '70, not on '72
Brake bridge/fork crown clearance (less on the '72).

Quick test - was hell to edit the post above.

EDIT: Looks as if the database errors have subsided.

Kurt-

You are a supervillian of C&V. I mean that in the absolute nicest way.

Incredible builds, wonderful job on the bar tape!

I never really cared too much about Paramounts, but every time I see one of yours my ears perk up.

Banjo...I'm with you. I grew up drooling over Italians and titanium that I couldn't afford and Schwinn was a bad joke that I tried to talk my Mom out of buying (a Mirada, I failed). Cudak's Schwinns make me wish I grew up a few decades earlier.

Muahahaha! "All your Paramounts are belong to us!"

Thank you - and may I say that you do a pretty sharp job yourself on your bartape as well - spiffy, especially the red Univega.

That put a smile on my face. Silly thing is, I'm looking for an '80s Basso right now

I thought you had an 80's Basso? Thanks for the clarification Kurt, I didn't realize just how different they could be. You did a great job with both.... but did any one here expect any different?

Yes, an '87 D'Arienzo rebadge - but I've been toying with the idea of a C-Record build :innocent:

Any components currently located in NH have anything to do with this latest inspiration?

That, and a spare C-Record headset, NOS Italian spindle, and a C-Record front hub in a polished MA2 wheel.

So you know what this means, don't you Kurt? ;) When any C&Ver comes to visit you in Miami, you must ride in pairs, on your nearly matched chrome Paramounts,
outfitted in matching early '70s racing kits  (that will be the day we see Kurt in any form of spandex), while wearing leather hairnet head protectors. All pictures must be shot using Ektachrome film.

Early 70's = no spandex. Wool. Jerseys and shorts, and shorts have real chamois in the crotch. Don't even think of putting jersey or shorts in a washing machine or drier. Shorts = black and only black, with optional white lettering of team name on the bottom outside of each leg. No bibs - suspenders okay, but no bibs. Shoes = black, preferably Detto Pietros, polished all over, including the bottoms. Cleats on the shoes = those TA things, long or short, with the tiny little nails that were worthless if your shoes had a metal shank, which all the good ones did (my favorite shop at the time riveted them into place - now that worked). And under that alleged helmet called a hairnet (kept your skull together for easier identification), a cotton cycling cap. worn backwards with the brim up. The cap, jersey and shorts should all sport the same team name for full points.

Extra points if the jersey has two chest pockets in addition to the three in the back. Extra-extra points if your spare tubular is folded up and covered by an old issue of L'Equipe or La Gazzetta Della Sport with the whole mess strapped under the back of the saddle using on old Binda toe clip strap.

Mention of wool shorts made me laugh out loud. It reminds me of a story my wife tells. She moved to San Diego with her old-school German parents when she was real young, and her mom used to knit her woolen undies.."woolies" she called them, for her to wear in the winter. She said they were incredibly scratchy especially when it started warming up (like in February). She says they were the most horrible things but that she was forced to wear them. When she talks about it her mother still gets angry and says "STOP EXAGGERATING! THEY WERE MADE WITH THE SOFTEST WOOL!" Maybe they washed washed and dried them like they weren't supposed to.... I can't imagine wearing wool shorts, but I'm sure the chamois in the crotch helped some.
