Kalloy stems?

Does anybody have experience with Kalloy brand stems? Are they good quality? They are certainly cheap, but are they cheaply made as well? Or would they be fine for a city bike? How is the finish? I can't seem to find any real detailed photos of any.

Origin 8 also makes a pretty inexpensive alloy stem that has a pretty nice finish.

I am currently using a few kalloy stems. They are ok, but you have to really crank down the bolt to keep the handlebars from slipping. Another thing about them is, they are really tall. Good luck finding them, I was looking the other day and everywhere was out of stock.

p.s. the logo comes off very easily with a little steel wool.

Cool. So other than the issue with having to crank down the bolt, are you happy with the finish and sturdiness of them? Do you have any good pictures of any of them?

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with them. I've been trying to find a 60mm in black for the Trek and a 80mm for the Fuji, with no luck.

All of these are Kalloy stems:

I've never had any problem with any Kalloy product. In my opinion, they are one of the best bargains available.

Kalloy is okay but if you find a used SR/Sakae stem you might be able to save some bucks. Lots of the SR stems can polish out and look Nitto quality but have slightly lesser treatment of the alloy.

Excellent. I was going to trade stems with a fellow BFer, but at Kalloy's prices I think I'd rather just buy one and have an extra.

big_heineken: Thanks for the pics. Beyond Bikes has 60s & 80s in silver and black.

You might want to email them and confirm that they do. I've tried to order a couple from them and when I email them a week later, asking why my order hasn't shipped, then they tell me they are out of stock.

I agree I do not recall kalloy parts causing anymore than their share of problems. I am looking for some ATB style ones myself as they are more upright but do not scream MOUNTAIN BIKE PART when you look a bike over

big heineken what kind of cable stops are those?

They were improvised from some crappy stem shifters. I didn't want to pay $15 for something that seems like it should be really cheap.

Here are some closeups:

That's probably a good idea. Thanks. Were they out of just the black ones? or silver too?

Also, that is a great idea with those cable stops! I was just getting ready to order some dt cable stops, but I think I will give this a try with some scrap stem shifters I have laying around. Thanks for the idea!

Kills me to see that on a Centurion.
I'll have to see what I can find.

I'd ask txvintage to help, but that A&M game.....

The Origin 8 stems are prettier and have a much nicer finish. The following is not the greatest of photos, but does show the only one I've owned so far. The aluminum finish shined as if it were the chromed steel on the bars:

Don't worry Robbie, it's in its original configuration right now. But watch out for these bars that I just bought on ebay:

Are you sure those are bars? I have something like that on my basketball goal so when I make a shot, the ball comes back. Only it's smaller, and you are in Texas....

I have a Kalloy adjustable stem that I re-sized, on my Ross Eurotour. I ride this bike almost daily. One morning, a heavy sheet of drywall broke loose from our detached garage ceiling and fell on handlebars at the stem. I heard the noise from inside the house. Absolutely no damage occurred. I'm about 3/4 of the way through the new set of tires I put on about that time. No problem with the bike or the stem.
