Bikes: Velo Orange, '91 Wicked Fat Chance, '99 Sycip Hardtail, '02 Sycip Pave custom, Benotto fixed, a playafied Bridgestone MB-3 and a bunch of hacks, beaters, townies, and 'projects'.

The Polyvalent will accomodate tires up to 42mm with fenders, but we really designed it with 38's in mind.

Okay, I get it now. My lack of understanding derives from the complete absence of fenders on any/all of my bikes.

A fender or strut is required, so that makes sense. I just never noticed the rack attached to the fender. A fender may be thin but it has a deep and wide cross section, so it should be adequately stiff.

Metal fenders like our alloy or stainless models are much stiffer than any plastic fender set you can put on your bike. And often, they are lighter.
