never noticed this was an old, resurrected thread. Actually, though I have tried to keep track, especially on the last bike, a '75 Motobecane Le Champion, I found it was impossible to keep to a fixed recipe. A drop of this, a toothpick covered with a hint of that, etc.

In anyone is interested in trying to get a close match to the classic 80s Univega and Miyata blue/gray color, here is an example of a powder coat job. The color is Poncho Blue from prismatic powder coat

I went to a CarQuest that mixes auto paint. Bike tubes don't have the surface area to read on their machine, but they matched off chips (they had numerous color wheels with chips that had oval holes in the middle to better facilitate matching) and it looks good to me.

I've had just OK results over the years mixing custom touch-up colors. Seems like I get it really close, but then after a few months the paint on the touched up area fades at a different rate, and doesn't match so well anymore.

Here's my all time best touch-up experience: Dupli-Color GM 509 Dark Cherry Metallic is a perfect match for the red used on 1982 Treks. I'm not talkin' close, I mean exact, like it was made for it.

This color was used on these '82 Trek models: 510, 515, 613, 614, 710, 715.

I know I am attempting to resurrect a hibernating thread but I see your post regarding touch up paint for your metallic red '87 Grand Record and was wondering if that paint color is the same as the color that I am trying to find for my '73 Raleigh Super Course TT (metallic Flamboyant Red). There are areas which are just a bit too bad to leave alone without trying to fix the paint but I want to be sure that the color I try does not make the bike look like it has a horrific case of the measles… Can anyone recommend a color match if this is not it?

IT's very hard to say if it's a match or not. Here is a pic of the bike that I referred to. Because we moved, I had to downsize my collection. I regret to say that the Record was a casualty of the downsize and now has a new owner. I know a Record is no big deal, but I do miss it even though I have a Centurion to replace it. Anyway as you look at this pic, the very top of the seat tube and the top tube next to the seat tube were repainted. After polishing it out, it's almost impossible to tell. Is it a match for yours? I don't know, but my guess is it's a shade darker. But that's just a guess.

Hey all,

You know how we all just swoon over that "magenta", or whatever it's called, on the 1987 (I believe) Schwinn Super Sport? Well, I am so enamored of that magenta and white color scheme of that year SS's, (rolling eyes), that I have ended up with 2 of them. So then, has anyone come up with an acceptable match for that magenta? I have traipsed through the cosmetics aisles of Target, Kmart, WalMart, etc, without finding anything that works. Now, I haven't experimented with mixing colors of nail polish; perhaps someone out there has some ideas for a decent color mix? Anything someone can share would be very much appreciated.

Seriously, I do happen to like those Miami Vice colors; the Centurion versions of that era even more so, just as some folks are really turned off by them. But that Schwinn magenta is proving to be a tough one for me to match, for some reason.

Several years ago I was looking to touch up the dark blue on my Colnago Mexico. I did some searching on the web and found this for not only Colnago blue, but also Gios blue, from Joe Bell. I got some of the recommended paint and it's a real good match. Here it is:

See if you can get some House of Kolor SG-110 Marine Blue. It's
manufactured by Valspar paint company. Spray over a red primer base and you
have Gios blue. Spray over a white base and you have Colnago blue. Clear
coat over everything. It's as simple as that.

Just picked up a 1977 Raleigh Supercourse which needed a few touch ups. The nail polish I recommend is from Walgreens and is Essie Nail Fifth Avenue, number 544. I think it is an exact color!

Just picked up a 1986 Miyata 100 in Georgia Peach for five bucks. Very minor chipping. Love the tips here and wonder if anyone has experience with this particular color. Thanks!

Testors Spray enamel 1629 Gloss Custom Red Metal Flake

Near perfect match for touch up. I sprayed in a few areas, sprayed it into the cap and brushed it on for small spots. I imagine it would work nicely for a Colnago Saronni Red as well.

Did this a few months ago but it stands out as one of my best off the shelf paint matches.

I have been looking for some kind of database to locate a matching color for my Trek 510 gloss black. I was hoping Testors gloss black enamel would be a good match but it is noticeably different while viewing in direct sunlight. I might try some nail polish next.

Heck, I am a web developer so if there is enough interest in forming a database I would be happy to look into putting one together.

When touching up the blue on my Raleigh Team Panasonic fork, I've found that RAL 5010 (Gentian Blue) is a perfect match. It came in a Duplicolor spray paint can.

I used Duplicolor Perfect Match - Universal Black (spray can) on my Merckx. Got it at an auto parts store. If your Trek is a standard gloss black without any metal flake, might be worth a try.

Only handy pic I have is a before pic. I sprayed the fork blades and left chainstay. Sprayed some of the larger pain defects and brushed on smaller areas with a nice match.

Thanks for the suggestion, although the Trek does have a very slight blue-ish metal flake to it when viewing in direct sunlight. I've had good luck with Duplicolor Perfect Match for automotive use a while back so I'll take a look at their selection.

My current question is about the metallic burgundy (or bordeaux as Pinarello called it) used by Pinarello in the first half of the '80s. Does anyone know the equivalent of car's coats?

Nice looking bike....I would suggest taking the frame to your local professional auto paint supplier, they have a book with all the paint sample colors from major manufacturers...I am sure you can find a close if not an exact match for any bike.
The chips even have a small hole in them so that you can overlay them on the part to see if the match is good.
The problem with metallics is that you will need a good gun with controllable air pressure to get the metallic particles to lay uniformly, spray cans can be hit or miss.

GIOS BLUE Hardcore spray paint RV 243/Babylon Blue, they have a wide selection of colors that may match other bikes...even Celeste!
